• i tell you, spring break is cramping my blogging style 😉 here's what the girls are doing right now. i can see them out the kitchen window, hanging out together.

    IMG_5285_edit_resize

    IMG_5286_edit_resize

i just don't seem to get as much done when everyone is home from school. it's just how it goes. throws off my routine, and just never seem to have a quiet moment to focus on anything. and  later bedtimes don't help either. i spent the weekend finishing up the painting in the house (pics to come), and cleaning. then the girls each had friends spend the night. but on two different nights. so we basically had one of their friends here for 3 entire days straight. even later bedtimes on those nights. joe's been umpiring a lot, so he's just crazy busy and not getting much sleep. we've had lots of soccer practices, and running around town for that.

i'm working on some things to share though. so stay tuned and i'll do my best to be a bit more regular around this joint 😉

  • i've been doing some painting around the house this past week. every now and then, i just need a change. i live and work in this house, so i stare at the same walls day in and day out. i can't help but want a different color wall to stare at. lol! this time around, it was actually a change that i've been wanting to do for over a year now. just havn't made time to do it.

    IMG_5024_edit_resize

but here's the thing. my way of painting doesn't require a lot of time. not that taking a day to paint is really that bad. but who really has an extra day to spare, in our busy lives? i don't. there always seems to be something, or many things, going on each day. so i use little bits of time. over a few days, if needed. and it all adds up, to get the job done. and i don't feel like i've wasted an entire day painting. it's also not as exhausting 😉

so, i thought i would share how i paint. this isn't for everyone. in fact, i'm pretty sure my mom just cringes at the way i paint (just kidding mom!). she's a great painter, and does it to perfection. she even paints other people's houses. i AM her daughter. so i do actually know how to paint the correct way and the perfect way, using all the right tools. i have all the right tools out in the garage. but i choose to keep it simple and convienent.

    IMG_5029_edit_resize

here's my painting supplies. the size of the paint can will vary obviously, depending if i have a quart or a gallon of paint. then i have some gladware disposable storage containers. the ones here, came with the turkey meat for the girls lunches. then i have my roller. btw, please ignore the icky tile and grout that makes up my kitchen counter. lol! i hate it, and would love nothing more to change it one of these days. look at how much darker the grout on the counter is, compared to the grout on the backsplash. gross.

    IMG_5033_edit_resize

yes, this is my roller. isn't it adorably cute? i do all my painting with a small 4 inch roller. entire rooms, even the entire family room and playroom. i've used the regular, larger rollers many times in the past. but for the past few years, i just use this little one. it's easy to use, less clean up, requires a smaller bucket, can fit in the paint can, and gets in the corners and edges.

    IMG_5036_edit_resize

first step, is to pour some paint into my "bucket". meaning the disposable storage container. lol! i've  used the larger containers in the past. but these smaller ones work just fine for me. i just hold this container in my hand, and "roll" the roller gently in there to load it with paint. i don't cover the roller in gobs of paint. just get a decent amount on there. just enough that it's not going to drip off. then i move the roller to the wall, and slowly get it started. once you know the paint is on there, you can start spreading it and rolling out any large amounts of paint. did that even make sense? lol! then i dab it back into the paint, and then on the wall. i'm not the most graceful person. but holding this container in my hand has never been a problem. i've never dropped it, or spilled. btw, this paint color isn't one that i'm using. well, it was going to be one that i used. until i rolled a large section of it on a wall, and decided it wasn't working. lol!

you might think that using a smaller roller takes longer. and maybe it does a little bit. but not a ton more time. i did above our fireplace, in about 10 minutes. a four foot wide archway (on two walls, and up to the ceiling) in about 30 minutes. above the kitchen counters, on two walls, in about 30 minutes. there was of course, some taping off and prep work, priming, and 2 coats of paint. but still not bad on the time.

    IMG_5041_edit_resize

what i love the most about doing it this way, is the convience of it. i can just do small sections at a time. one wall at a time, half a wall at a time. whatever works at the time. maybe i have half an hour to spare, maybe i have a few hours. the other morning, it was just me and haley here. she wanted to watch dora the explorer, and we had 10 minutes until it came on. so i told her that she could play for 10 minutes (i had played with her all morning, and i'm trying to get her to understand that she can play on her own too), and i would prime for 10 minutes. then we would watch the show. all i needed was 10 minutes, to prime half of the area by the front door that i wanted to paint later.

then, you just put the lid back on your "bucket" of paint. it's sealed up and ready to go for the next time. i don't even stir it, unless it's been sitting for a long time (like a few weeks or more). then the roller goes into a ziploc sandwich bag. the handle is still sticking out, but it's zipped up 98% of the way and folded over to seal it even more. the roller stays wet and is ready to use the next time. i keep it like this for days or more. the green roller you see a few photos up, is one that i've been using for an entire week now. not every day. but it's there and totally ready to go. i have one in a baggie for the paint and one for the primer.

    IMG_5009_edit_resize

and just a peek at one of the areas that i've been painting. that's the primer up there. i'm painting over the red walls. ignore the absurd amount of oak in my kitchen. and the wood colored blinds. and the tile counters. can you tell i don't like my kitchen? lol! but i'm working on some changes that i think will take the focus off the things that i can't change right now. and they all involve paint 😉

  • there was a new sketch up on the jillibean soup blog a while ago. and they've been showing lots of great projects this week based on it. wanted to share my take on the sketch with you.

    Jillibean_sketch_happybday_card

i decided to do a card. a little card that is just 4×4 inches in size. and it's a birthday card, which is the one kind of card that i never seem to make. lol! but i was reading erin's blog yesterday, and she was talking about all the handmade cards she's gotten and kept. and she happen to show some of my cards i've sent her over the years. i noticed that i had missed sending her a birthday card this year (it was really recent too). so right away, i knew this would be a birthday card and that it would be for her. of course, she's going to see it here on the blog before it gets to her in the mail 😉

  • sorry, my bad. i had no intention of taking 2 days off from the old blog. just sort of happened. good thing i had some projects up on the jillibean soup blog this week, so that it would force me to share. lol! i know it's looking and feeling a lot like spring around here. but i'm changing seasons, and going with some fallish projects today.

    Family_the_patch_2001

(click on it to see it larger. i forgot to take a picture of each page on it's own). dug out some old photos for this layout. from 2001, to be exact. geez, that was 9 years ago. but how cute are the girls? and look at sarah's little pigtails on the top of her head. so cute! this was another set of photos that had been scrapped already, but on 2 totally different layouts. and i made them for each of the girls albums, so that was 6 pages total (one was a two pager). now i have just one two page spread, that goes into the family album. little things like this make me happy. and those buttons? i actually had a totally different pumpkin patch layout, from a year before these photos. and it had no meaning to the layout, and was from a class that i had taught. so i tore off the photo and put it away. and threw the layout away. but those buttons had to be saved, since they were such fun ones (and already threaded). and they've been laying around all this time. i just happen to find them halfway through this layout, and tossed them on. i know, i know. you're so happy to have this amazing info on the "behind the scenes" making of this layout 😉

    Jillibean_cards

and a couple of cards. how cute is that cow stamp? it says "moochas gracias". love it! i didn't even notice that until after i had stamped it. and i walked around the house showing joe and the girls, and laughing the entire time. yes, i'm easily ammused. maybe that tractor stamp should have said "hay y'all". get it? HAY, instead of HEY. good one, right 🙂

and just a few more random facts that these projects make me think about. every time we drive by any cows, i do a long "mmmmooooooooooooo". and i sound just like a cow. it's like i'm calling out to them. and even though we're city folk, we do have a lot of country roads here, and a lot of cows. love it. i have secretly always dreamed of living on a farm somewhere. probably in the south. in a big farm house, with a barn and horses. and some land, with cows wandering around. a little pond would be lovely. and a long gravel road, lined with trees, and leading up to the house. and then some other random farm animals tossed in. some pigs, definately pigs. maybe a few chickens, since no farm is complete without chickens. but no rooster. i'd be firm on that one, since i'm not a morning person. i'd love to pull on my old jeans, my boots, and a flannel shirt. and live a quiet and laid back little life. will never happen. and if it did, i'd more than likely go stir-crazy. but i do like to dream about it 🙂

  • i know this is getting a little crazy. sharing another digital page. i promised you that i'm not making some big switch to digital. and i'm totally not. these are just pages that i've been making, while sitting upstairs when the girls go to bed. when i'm not around my supplies, and all i have is my laptop and a comfy chair. trust me, i've been making TONS of paper layouts and projects. i just can't share any of them yet. so bare with me on another digital layout 😉

    Nikolas_love_you_forever_blog

i used a layered template from cathy zielske to create this layout. it was really simple. just pulled up my photos and plopped them in the template. i changed the color of the stitching and the heart, and added my journaling in the journaling layer. and then i added my digital papers to the template as well.

one of my BFF's, lynn, made a comment to me last night that i had to jot down on my blog. she knew i had assignments to work on. and she knew that i was doing anything BUT working on them this weekend. she said, "you give yourself a window of time to work on assignments and you will find a way to close it shut until you have to squeeze through it". i had to laugh, because she knows me all to well. and she did say it out of love and was laughing about it, since we're totally different in this regard. lol! i'm such a last minute person, and a total procrastinator. but i seem to work the best under pressure. it's just what i do. so today, i did lots of other stuff around the house. tomorrow, i will wake up and kick myself for not working on my projects like i should have. but then i'll get them done. "always on time, but never early". that's my motto 🙂

  • wanted to make a quick layout for the blog, so that you could see something other than my face over the weekend. lol! i have a ton of projects going right now, so i really didn't want to take any more paper and product out. sounds like a good time for a digital layout, right? i actually went hybrid on this one.

    Forever_cousins

so, this is an 8×8 layout, which i then printed out and adhered to a 9×9 piece of white cardstock. the papers, photos, and title are all digital elements. and then the embellishments are all traditional products. real stuff. i started out with the acrylic overlay grid and the pink pattern paper, and no idea where i was going from there. dug around on my external hard drive, and tried out several photo options. finally settled on these 4 gorgeous girls. young women, really. the girls don't have any cousins on my side of the family, only second cousins that are all adults. but they are lucky enough to have two cousins on joe's side of the family. johvanna is on the top left corner, and is joe's middle brother, bobby's, daughter. and sally is on the bottom right corner, and is joe's oldest brother, johnny's, step-daughter.

and wanted to mention a few things for you to check out, if you haven't seen them yet.

jaime echt from crafter's workshop has a great guest blogger post on the creating keepsakes bog today. has some great ideas about using their templates on your layouts. i have a handful of their templates here, and they are so cool. a great reminder to pull them out as soon as i can, and make something cute with them. you can see it HERE.

have you been to chech out club CK yet? this is the new community site for creating keepsakes, and it's the cutest site. full of fun things to check out and participate in. there's a gallery, a message board, videos, and a ton of other sections. make some time to explore the site and register.

the new design team members were announced on the jillibean soup blog today. i see some familiar names, and some other's that i can't wait to find out more about. i know they're all going to be great additions to an already great team, and i'm so happy to be a part of it. congrats to them all!

if you're not checking the making memories blog every day, you should be. it has been full of inspiration lately, and we've all been working really hard to bring you new ideas every day.

  • this week is my turn to take on the designer inspiration challenge over on the making memories blog. since it was saint patricks day yesterday, we decided that my challenge would be to use the color green. and to find an item around my house to be inspired by. you can see the entire layout and read about it HERE.

    Laura_green_eyes_detail

  • i was getting ready to type up this blog post, and realized something. you're going to have to see my face on 3 layouts,  3 days in a row. i  do appologize, since that seems like too much of one thing. totally wasn't planned. lol! but i'm also proud of the fact that i do scrap about me, and have an entire album full of layouts about myself. i think it is important to make sure we get pieces of ourselves in the albums too. and you'll be happy to know that these next 2 will be paper layouts. i think it's cute that so many of you are worried that i'm going digital on you all. i'm certainly not. i promise 😉

    Laura_lucky

going to give you some insight into how i scrap sometimes. i might have mentioned this before. but i don't usually start with a story to tell. sometimes, i don't even start with a photo in mind. i'm very product driven. and this is how this layout came to be. one of our CK dream team sponsors, little yellow bicycle had generously sent over their new lucky me collection. of course, i wanted to use it (every single piece on this layout is LYB). i'm not a huge saint patricks day fan. meaning, we don't do anything special for it, or celebrate it, other than wearing green. but i loved the colors of this collection. and it had a ton of pieces that could be used for any type of layout.

    IMG_4860

so i started pulling out the papers i wanted to use. i had no clue what photos i was going to use, or how many photos. i just started building my page, with the cardstock and pattern papers. added the fun die cut swirl and the ribbon and gems. it was at this point, that i thought about this photo. it was taken by the super talented jenny weston (who is in charge of me at MM), while i was out in utah at the making memories offices last november. i had printed this photo for something else i was going to do, and never got around to it. it matched the products on this layout-to-be, and it was printed and ready to go. those are huge pluses in my little world. so onto the layout it went.

    IMG_4862

i added the blue pattern paper circles to add some more color and interest to the bottom part of the layout. and this chipboard embellishment just sort of fit on that circle. so there you go, my title is chosen for me. this layout is still totally un-thought out up until now. the photo just sort of landed there by accident. the title piece is chosen strickly because it was a good fit. "lucky". ok, i can work with that. i have things that i consider myself lucky to have. my journaling comes last 95% of the time. and it's always based on what my title ended up being. it's just how i work. once i choose the title, then i base my journaling on that. might be backwards for some, since i know a lot of scrappers start with a story or something they want to say.

and just something interesting that i noticed earlier today. my eyes look blue in this photo. maybe jenny was editing my eyes to match my shirt. or maybe they took on a blue tint. but they're really green. as in super green. which will be a clue to what tomorrow's layout is about ;)

  • what is this? another all digital layout? for anyone that is worried about me. no, i'm not making some big switch or leaving my paper. i could never do that. have you seen how much paper i have? lol! but i'm having fun just playing with the digital a bit. all my paper projects are more assignment based and guided. these layouts are just for fun, and i don't have to stress over  them being perfect.

    Laura_first_glasses

i have had this photo laying around for about 2 years now. i've been meaning to scrap it, and how i just recently started wearing glasses for the first time. or should i say, that 2 years ago i started wearing glasses for the first time. lol! more for reading and computer work, but now i seem to require them for a lot of other things. age, i tell you. i kept this layout pretty simple. because this is still all so new to me. the papers and photo part were easy. i'm very good at knowing basic sizes and measurements, and knowing the sizes that i use over and over. so getting the papers to all fit how i wanted, was the easy part.

but you don't want to know how long it took me to do the title. getting those letters the right size, and to fit there. i'm sure i did it the hard way, since that's how i am. i even added a few buttons. originally i thought that would be something i could add after i printed the layout. you know, go back and add some "real" stuff like buttons, ribbon, etc. but i sort of like that it's all one flat piece. i was thinking about adding some real thread to my buttons. or even silver mini brads. and i would like to staple the ends of the brown pattern paper, since that's something that i always do on my layouts (stapling borders and ribbons). but i didn't have a digital staple. lol! so i might just use my real stapler on that.

  • i'm still recovering from the time change over the weekend. losing that hour has really thrown me off, and i'm having a hard time getting back into my groove. it could be old age setting in, but i'm blaming everything on daylight savings for now. lol! so this is a quick layout share for the day.

    Alyssa_birthday_party_color

as seen in the february 2010 issue of Creating Keepsakes magazine. copyright creative craft groups. posted with prior permission from the publisher.

i was asked to do a layout, using themed product. where the products were obviously meant to go with the theme of the photos and the story. it was then, that i realized i don't actually own a lot of themed product. lol! but i ended up finding these pattern papers that i could tie together for the birthday theme.

    Alyssa_birthday_party_page1_color

these photos were from alyssa's 10th birthday party, which was at john's incredible pizza. the lighting was so bad in there, and all my pictures were really yellow. no lie, but it took me over a year to get around to editing them. i was dreading working on them that much. lol! they ended up looking ok in the end. but that's one reason i like having birthday parties at home, with lighting i have more control over. just a random fact there.
