Hey everyone! I have two more weekly spreads of my 2017 Project Life album to share this week, and first up is week eight. I realized that I haven't really been sharing too much specific information about the journaling cards. I shared in THIS post about the digital sets I've been using, and I've just been adding other digital brushes/stamps to them as I go. If you ever have any questions at all, feel free to email me or comment below, as I respond to all of my comments and emails on a daily basis 😉

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week8aa

This was another busy week, photo wise. I also had several 4×6" pics that I wanted to include, so once again, I added in a 6×12" insert to allow myself a little more room to groove.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week8b

I ended up using 13 photos, 7 journaling cards, and 4 filler cards – along with my calendar card and weekly title card.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week8c

Some weeks, I have more photos of my daycare cuties than I have of anything else. I remember years ago, when I did my first Project Life album (known as "Project 52" back in 2009), I made a conscious decision to NOT include any of the daycare kids in my album.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week8d

When I picked back up with Project Life last year, I decided that I would aim to include them each week, as they make up a huge part of my days. So I usually try and include 1-3 photos of them a week, depending on how many other family related photos I have.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week8e

It felt a little weird to me to put the weekly title card in the 6×12" insert, but then again, it feels weird to me to put it on the right side of the spread as well. Which is what I end up doing every other week, with the configurations of the page designs.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week8f

Most weeks, as I mentioned last week, the colors in my photos just seem to magically go together. This week, I had one photo that definitely stood out. This photo of Sarah, with her new-to-her car. We actually snapped that photo at night, so I had every intention of getting a better pic. But until then, this one works. I didn't even try to work red into the rest of the spread. I'm just going with the flow on this one.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week8a

I've noticed that green is one of my most used colors, when working on this album. I noticed it when working on last year's album as well. Yes, Sarah goes to the "green school" – we have 3 high schools in town, with one being known as the "red school", one being known as the "blue school", and then we're the "green school". Even the girl's elementary school had green as their school color, so we've had years and years of being green.

Then there's sports photos, which usually involve green grass. And I have tons of green in our house, decor wise. But finding green products? Sometimes I can spend more time then I'd care to admit looking for good green pieces to add into my pockets.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week8g

Senior night for varsity soccer was a big deal, and I didn't want to skimp on documenting it. I had dug up a photo of Sarah, in her very first year of playing soccer, and paired it with her senior year soccer pic to share on Instagram the night of their last game. I knew I wanted to include those photos here. I added the years using tiny number stickers.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week8h

The local photographer that takes the sports photos for our school always puts together these large schedules, that includes a photo. It wasn't until this year that I put 2+2 together (or should I say Sarah explained it to me), and realized that the players chosen for the photo are the seniors on the team. I cut part of it off in this photo here, but you can see it in the above photos. It was such a cool photo, and I simply took a pic of the photo on the poster to include here.

I had shared this photo on Instagram, on senior night, so I simply copied and pasted what I said on Instagram and used it as my journaling. So many of the photos I use within this album are also ones that I've shared on Instagram, so copying and pasting whatever I wrote there is a great way to start my journaling cards.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week8i

I have to admit, I wasn't exactly sure who Lecrae is. But even without knowing who he was (I have since looked him up and watched some videos), I was super impressed seeing this photo and hearing about the story behind it. Alyssa is majoring in Music Management and has an on-campus job as part of the Arts & Entertainment Team, which works on planning and holding all of the events on campus. She's loving it, and she absolutely loved working on this event and all of the behind-the-scenes work that went into it all.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week8j

I'm pretty sure I started typing up this journaling card, only to realize that what I was saying, I had already said in another journaling card a few weeks ago. Lol. Changing high school soccer to a winter sport this year was rough. We had so much rain, so many games postponed, and so many games played in the rain and on muddy fields.

It's always a little funny to see the "moat" around the field after a ton of rain. Huge sections of the track just fill up with water, and you know the ball is just drawn to it when it goes out of bounds. You hate to be the player that has to go after those balls.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week8k

I had one extra 4×6" pocket to fill, and decided that these two photos went together, so I would just add them side by side. I had already cut them apart after getting my photo order, so I simply adhered them to the back of the photo on the other side.

Those photos go to the daycare album project that I've been chipping away at. And I have tried taking photos of it, to share here – but the photos just aren't turning out. I'll have to try again this week, since I really do want to share how I approached this big project.

  • Hey everyone! And happy Monday! Hopefully, you all had a great weekend. Mine was super productive, which always feels good. I didn't do a single crafty thing, which is totally fine with me. Sometimes, I just need to focus on stuff around the house, so that I can start the week knowing I'm totally on track of things. Anyways. I've got a little news to share with you all today.

    LauraVegas_SSS_HeyFriend

I have recently joined the Sunny Studio Stamps team, as their new Social Media Coordinator! I have known the owner, Mendi, for years, through the industry and as a designer. We started talking a little shortly after I had left Bella Blvd last year, and she invited me along to CHA with her, to help her out in her booth. She officially asked me to join her team about two months ago, and I've been working behind the scenes since.

While I'm not officially designing for her (she has an amazingly talented team of stampers that you should check out on the blog), I'm hoping to play with her stamps and dies from time to time. While I would never claim to be a "stamper", I do want to learn a bit more about it. I'm what you'd call a very "basic" stamper. Meaning when I stamp, I simply stamp. One color, nothing fancy, and I am not really into coloring. At least, not yet 😉 Mendi sent me some of her stamps and dies, so I could create a few cards for the announcement on the blog.

    LauraVegas_SSS_HeyFriend2

I quickly realized that I would be better off focusing on the dies, since die cutting is one of my specialties. For this first card, I knew that I wanted to use the Vintage Jar set (stamp and dies), as I love jars! I used a little flower die (it's actually a freebie with any order), and die cut a ton of flowers from patterned papers. All of my papers on these two cards are from Close To My Heart.

I layered the flowers above the jar, adding stems to some and doubling up the flowers on some as well. I added coordinating enamel dots to the center of each flower. I intended on stamping my sentiment, but decided to use tiny alpha stickers to add my sentiment to the jar.

    LauraVegas_SSS_FriendsAreBetterThanTherapy

For my second card, I wanted to use the Family & Friends Word dies. I settled on the word "friends" and die cut a ton of them from white cardstock. I adhered them on a piece of white cardstock, cut slightly smaller than my card base. I then misted the entire piece with some purple, aqua, and pink misting sprays.

    LauraVegas_SSS_FriendsAreBetterThanTherapy2

I stamped my sentiment on a white office tag, using the Friends & Family stamp set, and added it to the front of my card. I had some flowers left over from the first card, so I added some of those to the card to embellish it.

I'm excited to be working with both Mendi, and Sunny Studio Stamps, and they've all made me feel right at home. I hope you'll stop by the blog and check out the awesome collections of products that Mendi has created (visit her store HERE), as well as the fabulous designs that her design team have been sharing on the blog (visit the blog HERE).

  • LauraVegas_2017PL_Week7

Hey again! I'm back to share week seven in my 2017 Project Life album. This spread doesn't feel like it has much color to it, since most of the photos were green and grey. I went with it, and did what I could.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week7a

I've been trying to go through my stash of Studio Calico 3×4 cards when I work on each week, trying to use up some of them. I had picked up a bunch of their project life kits (or whatever they're called) back when they were $5 each, so I have this large stack of cards. The one above was from that stack.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week7b

I talked about how I put together this particular journaling card in my post from last week, about my digital journaling process. You can read that HERE

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week7c

Last year, Sarah was so good about sharing photos from the high school soccer team with me. This year, not so much. I'm not sure if they just didn't take as many photos together, or if she just didn't share them. Lol. But I really love this group shot from their day at Six Flags towards the end of the season.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week7d

I mentioned in my last post that I will often leave space above or below my text on these journaling cards, thinking I'll add something to them. I searched and searched for something to add to this one, and nothing I found looked right to me. I finally just took a pen and scribbled some lines under "mascot". Over-thinking is sometimes overrated 😉

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week7e

I had printed this photo in both color and black and white, since I had a feeling the color version wouldn't work out well. I took this photo while at my tax appointment, and the expandable folder I had on my lap was this massively bright blue. It's a good thing I did have the black and white version on hand for this week.

The grey, frame filler card is from a Project Life set from Amy Tangerine. I was digging through my embellishments, looking for something to add to it, and came across some super old chipboard pieces from Making Memories. Most of them were raw chipboard, and I didn't feel like having to paint them. So I was happy to find the green heart piece, that fit nicely. I was going to put something under it (but then didn't), or I would have centered it better.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week7f

One thing I'm thinking about doing is re-organizing my stash a little better. I've always stored most of my supplies by manufacturer, as it always worked well for me (and came in handy when working on publications, where I had to know who made every little thing I used). There are moments when I look around my room, and it's almost like I have no clue what I even have, product wise. A lot of it is super old, but still stuff I like. But not having gone through a lot of it in quite some time, I'm just not familiar with what I have.

I'm getting a good feel for what I like to add to these pockets/cards. So it might not be a bad idea to corral those types of products, from any and all manufacturers I have on hand, into one spot. Of course, re-organizing a room that has been pretty set in it's ways for many, many years, sounds like a lot of work. I'll have to ponder this idea for a while 😉

  • LauraVegas_2017PL_Week6

Hey you guys, I'm back. Feels good to have some projects to blog about, even if they might all look the same to some of you. Lol.

Today, I'm sharing week six in my 2017 Project Life album. My girls contributed a lot to this week's photos, so I only added in two of my own pics. They sent me photos at the end of the month, so it's not until I have them printed and start sorting them out by week, that I see where they fall within the month.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week6a

I mentioned the struggle with fitting more than one 4×6" photo into the two main pocket page designs I'm using. Well, here's one solution that can work, depending on the photo. I had this 4×6" photo that Alyssa took at the 21 Pilots concert, and I simply cut it down the center, to create two 3×4" pics.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week6b

This project is finally giving me a reason to use up a lot of my older alpha stickers. I love the tinier ones for adding to my photos here and there. Also, my enamels are getting put to good use. They're fairly flat, so they work really well for embellishing, without adding any bulk.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week6c

I told you Sarah likes to send me dog photos! Lol. That's two in two weeks. I'm pretty sure that I meant to add something to the photo of Sarah and one of her BFF's, but accidently skipped over it. I might go back and do that still.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week6d

I love that I can usually get the colors of all the photos to tie together in a nice way, even though the photos were taken at all different times, different locations, and even by different family members. I was flipping thru some older Studio Calico cards, and this brown woodgrain ampersand card caught my eye. It ended up working in nicely, since I ended up with a lot of brown in my photos.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week6e

I'm finding that my average weeks will contain 4-5 journaling cards, and it's easy to type those up in one sitting. I can print 5 to a page, so it works out really well.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week6f

I started out a lot of my journaling cards, thinking I would add a little something to them after printing. So I may have left a little space on the top or bottom of the text, like I did on the card above. In the end, I had a lot of cards that I didn't end up adding anything too, since they felt right as-is.

I'll be back later this week to share another weekly spread!

    Sign-laura

  • Happy Monday! Hope you all had a great weekend! I managed to finished up my February Project Life spreads last week, and then finally got some good sun – and time – on Saturday, so that I could photograph everything to share. It dawned on me that some might worry that I'm not creating layouts anymore, after all these pocket page projects. That's not the case at all. I mean, I haven't actually created a layout in a couple of weeks. But I know I'll create more soon. I go thru spurts, for sure.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week5

I left off sharing week four, and over the next week or so, I'll be sharing weeks five thru nine of my 2017 Project Life album. I'm sure I took more photos of these spreads than is actually needed to share – but since they're the only projects I have right now to share, I figured why not.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week5b

This was a week that had more photos than usual. And it was also a week that had more 4×6" photos that I wanted to include. I love the mix of the two page designs that I've been using for each week, but the downside is that there's only room for one 4×6" photo, once you work in the 4×6" weekly title card. So for this week, I added in a 6×12" pocket page, allowing me to add in more of those 4×6" pics.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week5c

Have I mentioned how much I'm loving these weekly title cards (I'm using the Weekly Edition Journaling Cards, from One Little Bird)? A friend of mine was over last week and looking thru my album, and she commented on how you could easily add something to the cards to spruce them up. And believe me, it crossed my mind. But I actually like them as is. They're perfectly simple, which is what I'm going for.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week5d

One thing that I really haven't given much thought – but that sometimes catches my eye – is that some of the Project Life filler cards that I add in have rounded corners. While my photos and journaling cards don't. I really don't want to have to round the corners on everything, as it's just not the look I want. So for now, that's just how they'll stay. Mix matched.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week5e

I've been known to "borrow" photos from friends when I see them posted on social media. I can't remember if Sarah actually sent me a copy of this photo, but I know when I saw her friend's mom post this on Facebook, I quickly borrowed it, knowing I wanted to add this to the album.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week5i

It's a struggle when you have so many great photos, and you can't include them all. I know the entire point of doing this project is to give an overview of our weeks. So there's no need to include a ton of photos from one moment/event. All of those extra photos can go towards a layout or another project. But since I had a little extra room, with the 6×12" pocket page I worked into the week, I was able to include a few extra pics than I normally would.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week5j

I was going to journal on this yellow filler card, but in the end, I decided to simply add "bid day" to the card, since that pretty much sums up what the photos are about. I'll most likely be doing a layout with all of the photos from that day later on.

Again, using lots of older embellishments and alpha stickers on these spreads. The chipboard flower is a super old one from Pebbles, and the yellow polka dots just tied in perfectly with the photos.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week5a

Here's a look at the spread, once you flip over the 6×12" pocket page insert.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week5k

I ended up with an extra 4×6" pocket to fill, and added in this filler card. It's actually a journaling card that folds in half, so there's a crease in the middle. I just liked it for the green 😉 I went back and forth on what to add to it, and after adding these alpha stickers to spell out "Snapchat for the win" (which I mention in the journaling below), I literally said "I'm not sure that I even like that, but whatever". And into the pocket it went.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week5l

The two photos on the bottom are separate photos, but they had printed on the same 4×6" print from my photo order. I left them together, just on the off chance I would use them in a 4×6" pocket. Which I did.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week5f

Ha. There's me, documenting how I worked on my 2016 Project Life album, when some friends and I got together one evening for a little crop. That was back at the beginning of February, and I haven't touched that album since.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week5g

The quote on the yellow filler card is a little hard to read in this photo, but it says "it is important to remember that we all have magic inside us". It doesn't go with the photo exactly, but it felt like a good fit with Amy Tangerine's book Craft A Life You Love.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week5h

I'll be back to share week six tomorrow. I also need to start getting my next photo order ready, as I'll be placing that at the end of the week. Can't wait to get my March photos, so I can start on those!

    Sign-laura

  • Hey everyone! I thought I would be posting here sooner than I am. I had a fairly low key weekend, and actually managed to get a few vacation days squeezed in this week, since a few of my daycare kids were going to be home with mom for spring break. I feel like I've been doing a ton of stuff the last few days, while doing nothing at all at the same time. Weird how that can happen.

    JournalingCards1   JournalingCards2

Anyways. Let's talk about digital journaling cards. I've already shared a few weeks of my Project Life album, and have made mention of how I decided to do my journaling, as well as mentioning where I'm getting lots of my digital journaling cards from. But after sharing these two photos on my Instagram, over the last few weeks, I had some additional questions/comments about them. So I figured I would toss a post together about it all.

First up, I mentioned that I have a few digital journaling card sets that I've been pulling from. I don't want to overwhelm myself with too many choices. And as much as I love color, I decided to stick with all black and white journaling cards. It's just simple and easy, and they look good alongside the weekly title cards and monthly calendar cards that I'm adding to each week (which are also black and white). I don't even have to worry about a journaling card matching my photos, so that saves me a ton of time. I should note that a few of the sets I'm linking too below look very colorful! You can totally use them in color, or make them any color you want to match your photos, but I'm using them strictly in black and white at this point.

I thought I would share the digital journaling card sets that I've been using. Some of these are sets that I already had in my digital stash, and a few were purchased recently during a couple of sales. The sets from In A Creative Bubble are ones that I just purchased this past weekend. She has tons of great journaling sets to choose from, but the all black and white sets caught my eye. I think they'll mix in nicely with the other sets I've been using. It's not to say that I won't add additional sets to my mix at some point, but I think the following ones give me a good selection to chose from – without overwhelming myself with having TOO many to chose from.

I received a few questions on Instagram about my process for working on my journaling cards, so I thought I would recap a bit here.

I start my weekly spreads by slipping in my week card ("week one", "week two", etc), and my calendar card, and then adding in my photos. I leave empty pockets for journaling cards and a few filler cards. Once I get all of my photos added in for the month, I move on to the next step. I tackle the journaling cards next, and then once those are in, I work on adding any additional filler cards and any embellishments I feel are needed.

Since I will almost always have 4 weeks set up in my album at once (as I print photos just once a month for this project), I simply flip thru the weeks and start typing up journaling cards. I don't necessarily do them in order, or one week at a time. I might type up and print just a few for one week, and a few for another week. I slip them into the pockets, even if they might need something added to them later. From there, it's easy to see where else I'll need journaling cards, and where I want to put my 2-3 filler cards for the week. One thing that I try to do is make a good mix of journaling cards, as far as what designs I'm using. I don't want to use the same design twice on the same weekly spread.

    JournalingCards_Photoshop2

I use Photoshop to open up the journaling cards and type in my journaling. Some of the cards are super easy, since you're literally just adding your journaling. Like the one above. It's set up so that you simply start typing, and it spaces it out on the lines perfectly, moving on to the next line when you're out of space. It's a no-brainer to use.

    JournalingCards_Photoshop3

I also try and do a mix of journaling cards with lines on them (for the text), and some without the lines. Not that it really matters, but I like to have a good mix. The design above is also easy to use. I simply typed up my text, and then positioned it where I wanted it to fall within the card. If I wanted to add a little something below the "she said", I could just move the journaling down a bit to give a little extra space above it.

I've also used this card with totally different sayings up top. I simply deleted the words at the top (for example, "she said" on this card), and did a little tweaking to add back any lines that got erased in the process. Hopefully that made sense. Then I used digital brushes/stamps to add in whatever word/s fit my journaling.

    JournalingCards_Photoshop4

I've also created a few journaling cards simply using digital brushes, stamps, or even PNG images of cut files. Like the card above, for example. I used a digital brush from Ali Edwards ("game on"), along with a digital stamp from Kerri Bradford Studio ("rain or shine"). You can resize them as desired, and move them around to get the look you want.

    JournalingCards_Photoshop1

Some journaling cards take a little more time. This one for example. If you're familiar with Photoshop, you'll notice I have a lot more layers in my layer palette (on the right side). I used a digital journaling card from Ali Edward's, removing the day of the week that was actually at the top of the card. Then I typed in "first birthday", using a fun brushscript font. The "1" circle is from the digital version of Ali's Story Kit: Numbers.

When I went to type my journaling on this card, I ended up having to do each individual line as a separate layer. It was the easiest way for me to space the lines out the way I wanted, and also work around the "1" circle. It's not hard to do, but has a few extra steps.

    JournalingCards_Blog1   JournalingCards_Blog2

Once I finish a journaling card, I save it as a PSD file. Just in case I need to go back to it. Because belief me, I've had too 😉 There's nothing worse than having to start all over, so always save your working files as you go. All of these digital cards are sized to print as 3×4's, so you don't have to worry about sizing them.

The one thing that I do, however, before adding them to my page to print, is I go in and add a small grey border around the edge of the card. Because if you put several white journaling cards on a full sheet and print them out, you'll have a hard time knowing where to cut to make them all 3×4", and have everything where it's supposed to be. Unless you're super cool and don't need markings to know where to print. I'm not that cool 😉

    JournalingCards_Blog3   JournalingCards_Blog4

I can fit 5 journaling cards on a sheet of 8.5×11" paper. I started using the Epson Premium Presentation Matte Paper to print journaling cards or anything digital on, and I'm liking it so far. I used to print all of my journaling on cheap white cardstock from Michaels, and it would shred when I ran it thru my trimmer. Glad I tried a higher quality paper, and my trimmer is much happier too.

So, I think that's about it. For me, this is working. I love the idea of using up more of my Project Life cards, especially all of the cute journaling cards. I just know, that for me personally, it would take me forever to get my journaling lined up right and printed on those cards. Maybe if I had a typewriter, it would be more do-able. But I don't. By limiting my choices with these digital cards, and keeping it all simple, I can whip these journaling cards out in no time.

If I missed anything, or if you have any other questions, feel free to ask in the comments 🙂

  • I was going to save this post for later in the week, since I may not have anything else to share this week. But I just couldn't wait. I'm having so much fun with this project. I can't even tell you how many times I pull this album out to work on during the week, even if it's just little bits here and there.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week4

Today I'm sharing week four of my 2017 Project Life album. Still using the same pocket page designs as the first three weeks. Spoiler alert – I had to add in a few extra pocket pages for a few upcoming weeks ;)

I was at CHA for two days that week, and had so many photos I could have added. But the whole point of a PL album is to have a summary of your week. Right? So I choose just one photo to include, since all of the photos will find a home in one of my other projects. In fact, they already have.

I mentioned that I've been digging through my stash for whatever little embellishments I can find to add to some of the pockets. I decided to add a white tag to the orange filler card, where I placed my "CHA" alpha stickers, and then dug out a super old clear flower from Making Memories to add to the card. So fun to use things I've been hoarding away for years.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week4_2

For the journaling card above, I used a digital card from Ali Edwards' Oh Summer I Love You So kit. It's one that I'm using a ton, and I simply delete the "oh summer I love you so" that is printed on the top of the card. I can then either add a digital brush/stamp in it's place,  like I did here with the "down to the wire", or I can simply add a sticker or something to it after printing.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week4_3

I know I'm only four weeks into this project, but I am already finding my comfort zone with the journaling cards. I have about 6-7 digital journaling card kits that I find myself pulling from week after week. Just like the card above, from Cathy Zielske's Check It Cards No. 01 kit. I can see myself using one of those a week. Just like some of the other kits, where I can see myself using one of each of those a week.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week4_4

I don't aim to add a journaling card for each photo. For some of the photos that don't necessarily need a journaling card of their own, I might add a sticker or other embellishment to say something about it. But I do end up with photos that are just on their own. Nothing else to support them.

Like this photo of my Converse sneakers and flip flops. There's actually a small story to it, but I guess I'll just hope that I remember it down the road. I guess I could start typing up some little 2-3 liner journaling strips to add to some of these photos. Although I'm sort of fine with it just the way it is. Again, I'm aiming to make this super simple on myself.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week4_5

I added the chipboard camera and "smile" piece to the orange filler card, peeling off a few layers of the chipboard to make them thinner. Trying to keep these pages fairly bulk-free. I came across some clear stickers from Simple Stories, and decided to add the "pure bliss" sticker in the empty space on my photo of the little dude.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week4_6

The "Saturday" journaling card is one that I can also see using one of each week. Not just Saturday, of course 😉 These are from Ali Edwards' digital The Story Of Today 3×4 Cards kit. I also added some simple alpha stickers, from an old Project Life kit, to the photo of Sarah and her friend to break up the darkness of the photo.

I'm giving myself a serious pat on the back for having an entire month completed in full! I wish I had come up with a good plan like this when I started my 2016 Project Life album, as I might have had better luck getting more done in it. Still debating how I'm going to finish that project.

  • Hey all! In between the busyness of the weekend, and losing an hour, I managed to sneak in a little bit of creating. My February picture order arrived Friday night, and I've already got all of my photos worked into my Project Life album. I'm looking forward to working on journaling cards over the next few days for the five weeks worth of photos I added in. I also finished up two more weeks, that I'll share this week.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week3

Today I'm sharing week three of my 2017 album. I've still got the same two pocket page protector designs going. One has the two 4×6" photos and 5 3×4" pockets, and one has nine 3×4" pockets. When ordering my photos, I order almost every photo as a 3×4", unless it will only work as a 4×6" photo. It's easy to plan for that, since pretty much all of my pockets at this point are 3×4".

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week3_1

I've got my weekly title card – I'm using the Weekly Edition Journaling Cards, from One Little Bird for these. I mentioned before that I'm simply adding these to my photo order, so they're printed on photo paper.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week3_2

I'm using a variety of digital journaling card kits, from both Ali Edwards and Cathy Zielske, to do all of my journaling. So far, I've been adding 3-4 of these into each week's spread. For the photos that don't have a journaling card to go with them, I might add a sticker or some other embellishment, depending on what I find as I'm going along. Like the little "life is better with friends" sticker that I added to the photo of the daycare kids playing together.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week3_3

I used one of the digital journaling cards from Ali Edwards' Story Kit: Numbers, to go along with the photo of the actual kit, as this was the kit I guest designed for in January.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week3_4

I've mentioned before that I ask the girls, at the end of each month, to send me any photos they had from the month. Sarah will send me photos of dogs most months, and I honestly have no clue who's dogs they are. Lol. For January, she sent me all of four photos. One of which was a photo of her soccer sign on the fence – pretty much the same as the photo above that I took. And then she had this photo of a dude. I had to include it, since she only gave me four photos to work with, so I made sure to tell the story of it on my journaling card.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week3_5

I mentioned that I'm going to include a calendar card in each week's spread. I'm using the Project 52 Fresh Calendars from Becky Higgins – I'm linking to the digital kit thru her site, but I'm actually using the kit on the Project Life app. I use the app to put two 3×4" photos on a 4×6", and then I send them to myself using Dropbox.

I wanted to mark the week that the spread is for, and decided to use a digital star "stamp" to mark the dates on the cards. I lowered the opacity, so that you can still read the dates thru the stars. Once I had the markers on there, I sent them back to my phone using Dropbox, and then added them to my photo order.

    LauraVegas_2017PL_Week3_6

Once I get my journaling cards and a few filler cards added into the spread, that's when I start digging around in my stash to add a few simple embellishments to the spread. It might be some alpha stickers to add to a photo, a few small stickers to add here and there, enamels, die cuts, or maybe some chipboard pieces.

I don't stress over this part at all. I just dig around till something catches my eye, and I don't worry at all about trying to make it perfect. I'm keeping this project simple and easy, so that it remains do-able and fun. And so far, it's working!

  • Hey everyone! Hopefully you have heard by now, that Kerri Bradford Studio is back up and running!!! I know she's thrilled to have her new website fully functioning, and I'm excited to be back to creating for her blog. And today, I've got a new layout up.

    Spring-fling-600x138

When Kerri asked us to focus on spring projects this month, I knew exactly what I wanted to create. Seeing as how my girls are older, it's been years and years since we've colored eggs or had an Easter egg hunt. So I haven't had any Easter photos to scrap in years as well. But what I do have is Easter layouts from my earlier days of scrapbooking that I've been wanting to re-do.

    KBS_LauraVegas_EasterEggHunt

While I have no intention of re-doing all of my earlier layouts – as I think it's cool to show the progression of my style – there are plenty of older layouts that really have no meaning or purpose to them. I pulled out an Easter layout from back in 1998, which was actually a three page layout (guess that was a thing back then ;)), and got to work on re-designing it.

    OldVersion1998_1   OldVersion1998_2   OldVersion1998_3

I figured you might want to see the original layout, and for once, I thought to take a photo of it before taking it apart. This was created almost 19 years ago, back when Creative Memories was a huge thing. I won't say they had the only scrapbooking products out there, because I'm honestly not sure if that's true. But I did start out with Creative Memories, and they were really big on only using their products. Which pretty much consisted of colored paper, a couple patterned papers (literally just a couple), a few colors of alpha stickers (literally just a few), and tiny little Mrs Grossman stickers.

We used templates to cut our photos into shapes. We literally placed the template over the photo, traced it with a black pen, and then cut them out with a pair of scissors. They did eventually come out with a circle cutter (that I still use to this day), but I want to say the circle photos here with made with a template and a pen.

Scrapbooking has come a looooooooonnnnnngggg way since then, thank goodness!

    KBS_LauraVegas_EasterEggHunt_page1

Since my photos are from back in my film days, I had to work with what I had. Which meant lots of circle photos, some decorative cut corners, cut out corners, etc. I also had to accept the darker photos for what they were, as I couldn't just open them up in Photoshop and lighten them up, or fix the colors.

    KBS_LauraVegas_EasterEggHunt_page1a

I removed all of my photos from the previous pages, and cropped them as best I could, and worked most of them into a collage across the two page spread. I decided to keep a few of the circle photos as is, and work them into the design of the page.

    KBS_LauraVegas_EasterEggHunt_page1c

I love to use white cardstock for my backgrounds, but I also love to add some texture and interest to them, so they're not too plain. This is why I'm such a huge fan of using Kerri's background cut files. It's no secret that the circle backgrounds are my favorite, and I love to die cut them from white cardstock, to create my white-on-white backgrounds for my layouts.

I used one of my favorite circle backgrounds, from Kerri's Background Basics kit, for this layout. I cut two full 12×12" backgrounds, since I knew I'd be using them on both pages of the spread. I trimmed off what I didn't need from one of the backgrounds, and saved it for a future layout.

    KBS_LauraVegas_EasterEggHunt_page1b

For my patterned papers, I used several papers from Paige Evan's collections by Pink Paislee. I can't actually tell you what collections they're from, as that info doesn't seem to be on the papers (unless I'm totally missing it). I also added in the green dotted patterned paper from Jillibean Soup, for part of my title as well as the scalloped border I cut using the This & That: Spring kit.

    KBS_LauraVegas_EasterEggHunt_page2

Gosh, the photos are dark! I'm trying to be ok with it, but it's hard. Lol. I feel the need to point out two things about the photos. You'll see there are rounded corners, but they're not very clean looking. Well, that's because back in 1998, when I created the original layout, we didn't have that fabulous tool called a corner rounder. Back in the day, we would simply use a pair of scissors and make rounded corners freehand. So they never looked perfect or consistent.

I guess I could have used my corner rounder to give these better looking corners. Not sure why that didn't cross my mind.

Also, you might notice that two photos on this spread have a weird cut out in the upper corner. There was no fixing that, unfortunately, so I had to just go with it. It was also this thing, back in the day, to cut photos into circles and/or ovals, and then make a little cut out in another photo so that you can sort of butt them up against each other. That probably made no sense. Lol.

    KBS_LauraVegas_EasterEggHunt_page2a

For my title, I used a few handwritten words from Kerri's Bloom kit, along with the alphas from the Weathered Door [all] kit. I die cut each handwritten word from patterned paper, as well as black cardstock, to layer together and give some dimension.

    KBS_LauraVegas_EasterEggHunt_page2b

To embellish my pages, I fussy cut some flowers and leaves from a sheet of patterned paper to add to a few spots on the spread. To add some easy texture, I crumbled the flowers and leaves up, and then flattened them back out, before adhering them to the page.

I know people have different views on re-doing older layouts. I, for one, love it. Like I said, I don't intend on re-doing all of my older layouts. But there's plenty that could benefit from a fresh design. It does make my older albums interesting to look through though. Those old Creative Memories albums were strap-hinge albums. And you literally created the layout on the page in the album. So it's a little trickier to just remove a page. Not like you can just pull the page out of the protector.

Which means if you were to ever look through my older albums, you would most likely come across pages here and there where all of the photos have been torn off. And what's left is a deconstructed layout, with torn pieces of paper and left over adhesive. Kind of funny to me!

  • Hey everyone! I'm here a little later than planned, but wanted to do a super quick share with you today. It's related to my girl's school albums, and how I finally got around to incorporating their larger art projects that have been stored away in my closet forever and a day.

    SchoolAlbums2

I have done many posts on my school albums over the years, as they're one of the projects that I have managed to keep up with on a very regular basis. You can see all of my blog posts related to school albums HERE – just scroll past the first two posts, as those were about my own high school days album I put together last year. I did just notice that the last time I really shared anything on the girl's albums was over three years ago. Seeing that Sarah is about to graduate from high school in a few months, maybe I'll do another post, as I finish up her albums.

    LauraVegas_SchoolArt

One of the things that I never managed to tackle was all of their larger art projects, or pretty much anything that was larger than a regular piece of paper. I've had this huge pile of projects in my closet for years. We're talking from back when they were in elementary school, so a good 10+ years.

    LauraVegas_SchoolArt_10   LauraVegas_SchoolArt_9

I pretty much knew what my plan would be for those projects all along, but it took me those 10+ years to actually get around to it. I believe it was last summer when I finally took that pile out and tackled it. I knew that I wanted to simply take photos of the projects, and then I would incorporate those photos of the projects into their school albums.

I laid a panel of white bead board on the floor, and simply laid each project on the board and took a photo with my phone. I'll be honest, in that when it comes to photographing certain types of projects, my iPhone does a better job then my actual DSLR camera. And it's easy and convenient.

I then edited my photos right on my iPhone (using the PicTapGo app), and then uploaded them to Dropbox, thru the app on my phone. Once they were done uploading, I was able to simply grab them out of Dropbox on my laptop. I then cropped them to either 3×4" or 4×4", depending on what worked best for each photo.

    LauraVegas_SchoolArt_2

It took me several months to get around to ordering the photos. Mostly because I had uploaded them to a site I don't order from that often, but that I had credits for. I finally placed an order in January, and was excited to be able to check this project off my list.

    LauraVegas_SchoolArt_3

I started by sorting them out – figuring which belonged to Alyssa and which belonged to Sarah, and doing my best to figure out what grade they created them in. One of the biggest tips I can give, regarding memorabilia and school work, is to write your child's age and grade (or the year) on the back of any papers you save. You think you'll remember it all, or keep it organized and in order. But you won't remember it all, and stuff gets out of order and disorganized when you're not looking 😉

    LauraVegas_SchoolArt_4

I knew that I wanted to keep this super simple. Because truth be told, that's how the girl's school albums are. They're simple, with little to no fuss, because I knew that's the only way I would be able to keep up with them. I thought about slipping the photos into pocket pages, and adding those pages into their albums. But some years had only a few photos, so that didn't really make sense.

    LauraVegas_SchoolArt_5

I finally decided to just adhere the photos to black cardstock, trimming the cardstock down to whatever size worked with the amount of photos I had for each year. All of the pages are 12" in height, but they have varying widths. The ones above have 4×4" photos, so they're 5" wide.

    LauraVegas_SchoolArt_6

Some of the years only have photos on the front, and some also have photos on the backside. Just depends on how many photos I had that year. And these pretty much cover Kindergarten – 4th or 5th grade. I didn't really have any large projects once they hit 6th grade. They most certainly did do projects after that, but they were usually posterboard or presentation board type projects. And I was pretty good about taking photos of those projects over the years, so those will be included in the albums as well.

    LauraVegas_SchoolArt_7

To keep things simple, I die cut the word "art" to add to each page. I used the Weathered Door alpha kit from Kerri Bradford Studio, and die cut them from white graph patterned paper using my Silhouette Cameo. I was originally thinking I would die cut the grade as well – so that it would read "first grade art", "second grade art", etc. But since I had adhered the photos first, without knowing the rest of my plan, I really only had room to put "art".

    LauraVegas_SchoolArt_8

These will all get inserted into the girl's school albums, right alongside the rest of the memorabilia from each individual grade. Easy peasy, right?

If you happen to follow Becky Higgins on Instagram, she just did a ton of Insta Stories last weekend, as she was doing something along these lines for her kid's albums. I know those little snippets of videos are no longer there to view, but I do believe she'll be sharing a blog post soon about the subject (or maybe she's doing a Facebook Live video – I can't remember), and usually, those Insta Stories videos do end up on her YouTube channel at some point. Lots of good advice, and a lot of it really does line up with my way of thinking as well – so I always enjoy hearing about the "why" and "how" of her process.
