• I thought I was a guest blogger on the Creating Keepsakes blog today. Turns out, it was yesterday. I can't even keep track of what day it is anymore, which feels a little pathetic. Lol. Anyways. On to a little layout share.

    ItsAllintheDetailsKit-400x237

CK has lots of kits available in their store. In fact, I've worked with a few in the past, and even designed a kit from scratch. This new one is called It's All In The Details, and along with the kit you get full instructions for making two 12×12 layouts. I was asked to create another layout with this same kit.

    LauraVegas_CKCStLouis_KitLayout

And this is what I came up with. The kit included 2 sheets of patterned paper, from Crate Paper, with tags and journaling blocks that could be cut apart. So that's how I started this layout. I just cut into those two papers and put together what I thought would be a good mix for a layout.

Since a lot of the tags and journaling blocks that I was drawn to had more of a travel theme, I pulled out a few photos from one of the CKC's that I taught at last year. I've had them printed and in-the-works on another layout, but just never got around to finishing it. It was easy enough to swap them out.

    LauraVegas_CKCStLouis_KitLayout_detail1

I think I used a little bit of everything in the kit on this page. I mixed the two different alphabet stickers for my title, and layered tags and chipboard pieces onto additional tags and chipboard pieces.

    LauraVegas_CKCStLouis_KitLayout_detail2

I still love to rough up the edges of my papers to add texture to the page. And I still love, love, LOVE my pop dots.

Would you like a chance to win this kit for yourself? Just head over HERE to the CK store and check out all of the kits that are available. Then head over HERE to the CK blog and leave a comment telling them your favorite kit. A winner will be chosen on Monday!

  • Check out the Bella Blvd 2012-2013 Design Team that was announced today on the Bella Blvd blog

    1 ANNOUCEMENT FOR BLOG

I know I have been a bit absent around this blog of mine lately, and this is one of the reasons. Going through tons of talented design team submissions, narrowing down the options, finalizing a team, and getting that team all set up and ready to go is a lot of work. But I'm super excited to be working with all of these great designers, some of which I already know, and some of which I'm getting to know.

I'm also finishing up my last few weeks with our current design team members, collecting their last assignments, and talking about what's next for them. It's bittersweet. We've had an amazing year, and I loved working with and forming friendships with all of the designers. It's going to be weird not hearing from them quite so often from here on out. Luckily, I can still keep up with everyone on their blogs, Facebook, Instagram, and all of those other social media sites and message boards that us scrappers like to spend our time on.

We are going to start introducing you to each of our new (and returning) design team members starting on Monday, October 1st. I hope you'll stop by the Bella blog and check them all out!

  • As of last week, Friday nights are all about football games again. And the marching band. The marching band that plays at the varsity football games. You know everyone only comes to the games to see the band play, right 😉

    FootballGame_Collage_blog

I had to miss the first game, since I was at CKU (still need to blog about that), but Alyssa captured these fun photos of her and some of her closest band friends before, during, and after the game. Love that she has her iPod touch for things like this.

We're headed back out there tonight. I love watching the band together. I love the music and how much fun they have, showing their school spirit. I can't wait to see their half-time show. Especially "Party Rock Anthem". And you know what? I might even watch some football while I'm there 🙂

  • I'm coming off a very busy weekend, and am having a hard time catching up on everything. I spend three fabulous days teaching at CKU (more on that later), attended a family wedding, and spend hours pouring over submissions for Bella Blvd's design team call. The craziness never seems to end. Over the weekend, I also had a layout go up on the Bella Blvd blog for our Saturday Sketch feature.

    DaycareKids_CoolinDown

I decided to turn the sketch on it's side for my layout, since I had vertical photos that I wanted to use. I dug out these super old photos of Sarah and a few of the daycare kids playing in the backyard on a hot summer day. I love finding everyday photos that I havn't scrapped yet, when digging around on my external hard drive.

    DaycareKids_CoolinDown_detail1

I ended up skipping the circle element on the sketch, and just placed my title in that same general area. I used a mix of pink chipboard alphas and yellow alpha stickers.

    DaycareKids_CoolinDown_detail2

I'm sure you have figured out by now that I love using this graph pattern paper on so many of my layouts. It's just a really nice neutral paper to use, in place of white cardstock. And it makes lining things up super easy, with all those lines to use as guides.

  • This weekend, we had to do a little shopping. We are headed to a wedding this coming weekend for one of Joe's cousins. Nothing like a wedding to make us realize that none of us own any nice, dressy clothes. Lol. We all live in jeans, shorts, and tshirts. Apparently we don't go places which require anything different all that often.

    Girls_Ipod copy

So in-between all of the other weekend stuff … deep cleaning the kitchen and family room, cleaning blinds (ugh), laundry, homework, umpiring, scrap work, and all 4 of us being sick … we made a few shopping trips. Yes, multiple trips to the same two stores. For various reasons.

Like one store missing taking off a security tag, and we didn't set off the alarm, which meant we didn't notice until we got home. Or me forgetting to print out a coupon for Kohl's, so we went back and bought the same stuff the next day and then I made another trip to return it all with my original receipt. Yes, I'm THAT kind of shopper.

    Girls_Shopping1

And of course, the girls took photos in the dressing rooms. That's what you do in there, right? It's not JUST for trying on clothes. In fact, they're wearing their own actual clothes in these pics. But they do in fact take pics of things they're trying on too.

Now, check out the photo above. It made us laugh when we saw it. That's Sarah on the left and Alyssa on the right. Sarah just turned 13 years old in June, and Alyssa is going to be 16 in just a few weeks (EEK!). Ummmm. We're not sure why Sarah is so tall. Poor Alyssa is a petite thing. She says her goal in life is to reach 5 feet. Well, she's a half inch shy of 5 feet. And Sarah? Well, she's just about 5 feet, 4 inches. She's officially taller than me now. And the girls is all legs. They're crazy long!

    Girls_Shopping2

They took these on our second trip to the same store. I was in one of the stalls, trying something on, and I heard them saying how if Sarah stood in the back, maybe she would look shorter. Maybe not. And what's the look on Sarah's face? Don't ask. She's a bit crazy. I would blame in on the cold medicine, but I found her's laying on the counter today, so she never actually took it.

    Girls_Shopping3

Bend those long legs, scooch down, and let your big sister be the taller one for once 😉

    Girls_Shopping4

After all of those trips, I do believe we all have something to wear next weekend. I even have "extras" which didn't make the cut in the "try it on again in the comfort of our own home" part of the decision process, and will be returned on yet another trip to the same stores. Which works out just fine, since I earned lots of Kohl's Cash that I can then use to buy us more jeans and tshirts 😉

  • Computers. I don't know about you all, but I have this love/hate relationship with my laptop. I love it to death. When it works and does all of the stuff I want it to do. I hate it with a passion. When it gives me problems, and won't let me do the things that I normally do. And lately, I'm definately leaning more on the "hate" side of our relationship. So frustrating.

I've been in this funk lately. I havn't done any actual scrapping in almost 2 full weeks. So weird for me to go that long without cutting paper and gluing stuff. The craziness of life is wearing on me. Girls back in school. Soccer in full swing. Daycare kids running me wild. Scrapping jobs sucking down my creative energy. Just been really, really tired lately, which makes me avoid my scraproom. So last night, I thought I would make a few quick digital layouts, just to do something creative.

    Mateo_ThisKid_blog

Meet Mateo. He's been with me for about six months now, and he's just about 10 months old. He is unbelievably adorable! And such a great baby. I really love this age, where they are developing such strong personalities. I love that he is more mobile, crawling around, pulling himself up, cruising around the furniture. But that also means he can get to where he wants to go. And that's usually straight to me. Lol. He loves to hang on me, and have me sit and play with him. Which is all good. Except that sometimes, I do actually have to get stuff done around here. But it's so hard to resist that cute little face!

As for the layout. I have used this digital template before for another layout (seen HERE). I love this template, and figured I would just use it again, for both of these new layouts. It's not like these layouts will be side by side in my albums, so it's totally fine with me to use the same basic design.

    Zachary_LaughLots_blog

I've already introduced you to Zachary. He's getting so big. He's two and a half now, and he's a real character. While we tell Mateo how adorable he is all day, we tell Zachary how hilarious he is all day. On days when he's not here, it's so quiet and sometimes a bit boring. He definitely livens up this joint, and keeps us laughing. He's even funny when he's trying to be all serious. He gives us these straight faces, with the pouty lips and one raised eyebrow, and we just bust up laughing because he's so funny.

And if Photoshop had let me finish this layout, and add my journaling, it would have said something to that effect. How he makes us laugh all the time. BUT. Photoshop kicked me out last night.

    Ughhhh

As in, it literally kicked me out and apparently decided to un-do my layout that I had saved and re-saved about 10 times as I created it. When I went to open it this morning, my file showed nothing but a red line on it. Lovely (said sarcastically, in case you didn't pick up on that).

So I pulled up everything I had picked out for this layout last night, and re-created it this morning. However, I cannot get into my folder that has all of my digital journaling stuff. That's the same folder that started locking up my computer last night. So I gave up on the journaling for now. Just imagine that I have journaling strips on that blue diagonal striped paper. If I can get it all working later, I'll swap out the finished layout.

  • I seemed to have lost all control over my time lately. Too much to do, and not enough time. Little nuggets of downtime, but not long enough to actually accomplish anything. Work, work, and more work. Not enough time to relax and play. I havn't really had the time or energy to create anything new the past week, so I thought I would share another one of my CHA layouts for Bella Blvd.

    LauraVegas_Sophisticates_SuchAnInfectiousLaugh_blog

I actually created this for the CHA Summer catalog, and was asked to focus on the Sophisticates alphas. The older lowercase chipboard alphas, the newer uppercase chipboard alphas, and the alpha stickers.

    LauraVegas_Sophisticates_SuchAnInfectiousLaugh_detail2

I started by picking out a mix of the chipboard alphas. I used the newer white text, the pink, and the blue. Then I added in some older lowercase green alphas, and yellow and pink alpha stickers. I won't tell you how much time I spend picking out the letters, and mixing up the colors. It's not hard, but I overthink it.

    LauraVegas_Sophisticates_SuchAnInfectiousLaugh_detail1

After choosing my alpha colors, I set out to pick my patterned papers. I used my favorite grid patterned paper for the main part of my layout. It gives the nice white background, so that everything else "pops" on the page, but still has a bit of interest with the grid lines. The other papers are from the Birthday Boy collection, the Birthday Girl collection, the Thankful collection, and an older All Inclusive collection (the text paper).

    LauraVegas_Sophisticates_SuchAnInfectiousLaugh_detail4

I also used lots of chipboard pieces from the Sophisticates collection. The sun and clouds, a trio of trees, and some border pieces. See that orange tree? The tree trunk wasn't very tall, but I wanted it to be the tallest tree of the bunch. So I cut off a tree trunk from another tree in the package, and did what I could to make it look like it was all one piece.

    LauraVegas_Sophisticates_SuchAnInfectiousLaugh_detail3

Hopefully, I can come up with something to blog about this week. I have ideas, but not a whole lot of motivation to carry those ideas out. So frustrating.

  • This week, we are sharing some simply tutorials from some of our design team members on the Bella Blvd blog. I put a tutorial together for today's post, on how to create these fun sunburst backgrounds.

    LauraVegas_SunshineHappiness_SummerMemories

I created this layout for the booth, for CHA Summer, using the Sunshine & Happiness collection. I wanted to use several of the colorful patterned papers, and thought a fun sunbursts background would make a great backdrop for this photo of Sarah. I grouped the photo and journaling together on a 9×9 piece of green cardstock, which sort of gave the appearance of a smaller "layout" on top of my layout. If that makes sense.

    LauraVegas_SunshineHappiness_SummerMemories_detail1

I cut out several shapes from the Cute Cuts paper for accent pieces. The polka dot cloud and the sun, topped with a button, are so cute together. I also added in some white embossed dotted cardstock from Core'dinations, to help all the other patterned papers "pop" more off the page.

    LauraVegas_SunshineHappiness_SummerMemories_detail2

I love the look of machine stitching along the edges of each "burst" piece, but it's a bit time consuming to do. I started out with the intention of only doing a few rows of machine stitching. But I couldn't stop, and ended up doing each and every row.

    LauraVegas_SunshineHappiness_SummerMemories_detail3

I had a bit of a gap between my photo and my long journaling sticker, so I layered two strips of designer tapes together, and stapled the ends. I also added a sprinkling of threaded buttons to the page, to embellish.

    LauraVegas_SunshineHappiness_SummerMemories_detail4

Some of you may know that I am NOT a fan of using my own handwriting on my layouts. I know, I know. It's important to include your writing, for future generations. But for the most part, I just think it takes away from my style. So I still print out little journaling strips, even when my journaling sticker has lines for easy writing.

Check out the Bella Blvd blog for a full tutorial on how to create this sunburst background.

  • I'm a few days later than planned on this. Sorry if you thought my "I'll share my layout tomorrow", actually meant "tomorrow". Lol. Anyways. I have this layout up over on at Kerri Bradford Studio today.

    Alyssa_JuniorYear

Here’s the layout that came before the cards that I shared last Thursday. I started this layout, wanting to use the Print files from the This & That: School Kit as my patterned paper. I did end up using a few other patterned papers. The red number circle paper and the lined paper are both from Little Yellow Bicycle.

All of the pieces making up the patterned paper border along the left side of the layout are cut straight from the Print file sheet. I just pulled up the file and printed it. Didn't resize anything. Then I cut out all of the individual pieces and started laying them out, coming up with a plan.

    Alyssa_JuniorYear_detail3

I added a few embellishments to these layered pieces. A few badges from October Afternoon, some brads from Crate Paper, and a chipboard accent from Fancy Pants. And a favorite polka dotted ribbon from Jillibean Soup.

    Alyssa_JuniorYear_detail5

Even these little word pieces were from the Print file. They remind me of the old school word fetti stickers from Making Memories.

I also wanted to cut a few of my titles from those same patterns, so that they would match perfectly. This is where I had to get a little creative, since I needed pieces that were much larger to cut from. I came up with an idea at the last minute, and if I had thought about it last weekend, I would have filmed a little tutorial video. But my week has been rough and hectic, so we'll have to settle on a screenshot tutorial. Edited to add: since we waited a few days to share this, I actually did have a weekend where I could have filmed something. Totally slipped my mind.

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking1

I started by pulling up one of the Print files that I wanted to work with, and choose which paper shape I was going to use for my cutting.

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking2

Using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, I select the paper that I want, by dragging a box around it and then selecting Copy from the dropdown menu (under edit). This black ruled piece can be seen up at the top of that border strip on my layout, with the A+ badge on it. Much too tiny of a piece to cut from.

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking3

I opened up a new canvas to work on. I choose an 11” x 8.5”, since my printer only prints standard paper sizes.

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking4

From the dropdown menu (under Edit), choose Paste, which will paste the image you copied onto the blank canvas. You will go to your dropdown menu again (under edit), and choose Free Transform. Normally, I would hold down the Shift button while dragging one of the corners in or out to make the images smaller or larger in size, but still keeping the general shape intact.

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking5

However, I wanted to make this image larger, but also wider so that the ruled lines didn’t end up too far apart. So I didn’t worry about holding down the Shift button, while dragging out the edges of the shape to make it stretch across the page.

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking6

Since I was going to be cutting out a few different titles, I wanted to cover my entire paper with the black ruled patterned paper. Had I just made my original shape larger, to fill the page, the ruled lines would have been very far apart. So this is why I made the shape shorter and wider, and then simply copied and pasted it, so that were actually two on the sheet. When finished, just flatten the image, and send it through your printer (I used textured white cardstock).

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking6b

Here’s a look at what I was cutting out on my Silhouette. The “And so it begins” and the “Junior Year” were for my layout, and the two “ABC” were for my cards. Sidenote: I really wish I was showing you a Cameo cutting mat in my screenshot. Lol. One day, I will upgrade. I hope.

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking7

And here’s a look at how it all cut out of my printed paper.

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking8

I also needed to cut the “And so it” and “Junior” to add to my layered titles, and I wanted to cut them from papers that matched the ones that were on my layout from the original Print file. So I pulled up the second Print file, and choose the two papers that I wanted to use to cut from.

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking9

I choose this lined yellow paper.

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking10

    And this grid blue paper.

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking11

I used the same steps that I used before. Selecting the Free Transform from the dropdown menu (under Edit), and dragging out the edges of the paper until the size looked right for what I was going to cut.

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking12

You could easily enlarge several of the paper shapes from the Print files, and combine them onto a sheet or two to print out.

    ThisAndThat_Tweaking13

You can see here that I had plenty of room to work with once I cut out the titles I needed. I could have added more shapes to cut, use the extra on another card or layout, or even use it with punches for embellish my layout or cards.

    Alyssa_JuniorYear_detail1

And a look at the completed titles on my layout. I think I have mentioned before that I tend to lose track of any dots for my i's, j's, etc. This time, I was so careful to keep track of mine, and even ran them through my Zyron, so that they'd be adhesive ready and in one spot.

    Alyssa_JuniorYear_detail2

And then I lost that strip. I'm not a messy scrapper at all, so it's weird for me to lose things like that. I ended up tossing some brads on there, to dot my i's. And then later that night, I found my dots. Figures.

    Alyssa_JuniorYear_detail6

While Kerri’s This & That kits are fabulous for their intended purpose, which is for creating the gorgeous altered trays, keep in mind they can be used for lots of other projects as well. Break them down, and think of other ways to get the most out of them. And if you’re looking for a fun alternative to your regular patterned paper stash, really take a good look at the Print files, as you have a good selection of patterned paper right there. And you only have to print what the amount of paper you need!
