• i happen to mention this on facebook a few nights ago, and got a "are you kidding me?" response from one friend. turns out she's going here too, and had already signed up for classes. so i thought i would toss this out there, just in case anyone else is in this area.

    CK-Scrapbook-Conventions-te_13290

    ST_-LOUIS-TEXT

i'll be teaching at CKC St Louis next week, april 7-9, for creating keepsakes. there's tons of great classes on the schedule, and registration is still open until midnight ET, march 31st. that's just one more day. for any of you headed out to the convention, be sure and stop by to say hi 🙂

  • i have a creating keepsakes layout to share today, from the scrapbooking tips & tricks: texture issue. i know we're just heading into spring, but let's backtrack to fall for a minute 🙂

    The_patch_spread_redo
as seen in the Texture issue of Scrapbooking Tips & Tricks magazine. copyright creative crafts group. posted with prior permission from the publisher.

i held onto these photos for almost a full year, before getting an assignment that was perfect for them. texture. i'm all about texture on my layouts. in fact, if my layout is too flat, it just doesn't feel right to me. i need some extra dimension, some pop dots, some layers, something a little bit bulky. doesn't have to be a lot or go overboard. but there has to be something there.

    The_patch_page1

my first thoughts on colors for pumpkin patch photos would be brown, orange, and green. but alyssa was wearing a purple shirt, and sarah was wearing yellow. so i worked those colors into my layout. i still think purple and yellow can be very "fallish" colors, when mixed with orange. so i used orange as one of my accent colors, adding a little bit here and there.

    The_patch_detail

i cut off pieces from a cardboard box in the garage, to use on this layout. i simply tore the top layer off, so that you can see the corrugated part of the cardboard. lots of texture there. i used two smaller pieces for little accents, at the top of the pages. i took some embroidery floss and wrapped it around the cardboard piece, numerous times. then i used a small safety pin to secure a mini tag with "october" printed on it.

    The_patch_detail_title

i knew i wanted to use my jillibean soup corrugated alphas for my title, since they have the same look as the cardboard pieces i was using for accents. i choose the white alphas, and used my finger to add a touch of orange paint around all the edges of each letter.

it's not super noticable, but my green cardstock is embossed with leaves. adds a subtle touch. you might notice a few little tears on the yellow dotted paper. i originally had my title letters going a little uneven. we, or should i say the editors, decided that they'd look better straight. i do have to agree with them. my love of using strong pop dots did make for a few small tears, but nothing too bad.

    The_patch_page2

i had so many photos from that day, it was hard to pick just a few. well, i do have nine photos on here. but i had a lot more i wanted to use. lol! on the corrugated cardboard accent piece on this page, i tucked a few stick pins with little pumpkins on the heads, into the embroidery floss.

    The_patch_detail_photomat

part of what i was supposed to do on my layout, was to create a fun layered photo mat. the issue was all about texture, so i wanted to add a lot of texture to my photo mat. i started with some orange polka dot fabric, layered on some purple magic mesh (yes, i still own lots of that stuff!), and then a piece of corrugated cardboard. and then my photo. it actually didn't add that much bulk, since the fabric and magic mesh are thin.

    The_patch_detail_journaling

and my journaling. i used an orange ink pad on the edges of each journaling strip. which actually makes me wonder if i used an ink pad on the title letters. i seem to remember paint. maybe i used a mix of both. it was so long ago, that i forgot 🙂

  • i have been doing a gazillion layouts and projects these past few weeks. i had a little break over the weekend, and wanted to create something. but i didn't really feel like doing paper layouts, since that's all i've been doing. i thought i would have some fun, and make some digital layouts. havn't done one of those in a while.

it can be overwhelming to me, to open up a blank canvas in photoshop, and not know what to do next. so many choices, so many products and folders on the computer to dig thru, photos to pick out. let alone figuring out your page design. so i love to use templates when i digi scrap. basically, it's like using a sketch. except when it's digital, you just have to plug in all the elements as you go.

    BasicGrey_TEM_D557_HappyBirthday_cover

i choose this basic grey template to work with. i've had it for ages, but have never used it. i love the simple and fun design to it. i like how the two photos are grouped together, with the journaling block. and i love the fun banner, and loopy title. heads up. click on any of the photos to see the products and layouts up closer. they look better that way 🙂

    Girls_Happy_digital_workfile

i started by picking out some digital elements that i wanted to use. different pattern papers, some stitches, a few embellishments. the template has a banner on it, but i happen to have a few banners in my stash. so i pulled one of those out, that i would put in it's place. i may or may not use all these by the time i'm done with the layout. i might pull out additional stuff. but it's nice to have an assortment to start with. most of what you see here is from creativity by crystal.

    Girls_Happy_digital_resize

here's the layout i came up with. pretty simple. i took off the "birthday" from the title. and i also removed the banner on the template, and just added my banner element. and i did take off the straight stitch that was on the template, and added another colored stitch element that i had, along with some staples at the ends.

    Heather_Happy_digital_workfile

here's the second set of elements that i pulled together. most of these are from a few of jen allyson's kits, seen HERE and HERE. i knew this collection had a banner as well, which is one reason i went with these colors and papers.

    Heather_Happy_digital_resize

and here's the layout. i used a few photos that i had taken of heather, my friend deneen's daughter. i tried out a TON of pattern papers, where the white ruled paper is. and i mean a LOT of them. but nothing looked right, so i went with the ruled paper. even though i used it on the layout above too. once again, i deleted the "birthday" and the banner from the template. once i added my banner element on there, i decided to swoop it a little more to one side. i then adjusted the "happy" text, so that it still rested above the banner. instead of the stitching, i added the aqua trim, along with some staples. i asked deneen for some journaling, and she said these photos reminded her of a favorite song called "smile", by uncle kracker (a favorite of mine as well).

    Haley_digital_workfile

and the third set of elements that i choose. these are from sara schmutz, from her summer picnic collection. once again, i knew this collection had a banner in it. honestly, that's the main reason i went with this set too.

    Haley_digital_print_resize

and my take on those elements. pretend the black line isn't there, around the edges. i just added that to define the edges, since i have white cardstock as my background on this layout. once again, i removed the banner, and replaced it with the banner element i had picked out. if i didn't have these premade banners, then i would use the one on the template. i added some stitching around the edges of the layout. i took off the stitch on the template, and added some polka dot tape, and then some additional stitching below that. i also added a few buttons, with some silver accents to look like brads in the button holes.

on this layout, i removed the "happy birthday" entirely. for the life of me, i couldn't pick a title for this layout. i was convinced i could find a digital word or phrase, but it wasn't working out. i actually just now added the "pretty girl" to this layout, right before i added it to the blog post. i may change my mind in the morning. the great thing about digital, is that i can go back and change things before i print them.

so there you have it. three takes on one template. i think i might have said in the past that "i will NEVER digi scrap". there was nothing to be afraid of. it's so easy, once you get down the few main tools and buttons to use. i think it's fun to stretch your creativity and challenge yourself, from time to time.

  • i can't seem to catch up this week. which explains the lack of consistent blogging. so i thought i would share some facebook randomness with you in the meantime. just copy and paste. that's easy enough.

    IMG_9672_edit_resize

this is sarah at bedtime, saying "goodnight and peace out". sidenote: i took this photo in total darkness, and it looks better than my indoor photos during the day. which means i might start taking all my pictures in the dark. lol!

    IMG_9673_edit_resize

and this is alyssa at bedtime, saying "i just spent 7 hours at school, 5.5 hours at soccer and riding the school bus to and from the game, another hour doing homework, and i have to get up in just 8 short hours from now. so stop messing around and get out of my room with that camera". yep, that's totally what she's saying in this photo 😉

it bugs me to no end that people around here don't think stop signs apply to them. which is why, if you're behind me and not stopping … i will stop extra long, to account for both of us. and just to annoy you as well 😉

    IMG_9279_edit_resize

after the 29th time of winding up a random toy for the boy, i'm regretting showing him that it does anything at all. i should never let on that some toys do things, move, make noises, or scoot across the table … unless it doesn't require me to wind it up.

i just LOVED spending $91 to fill my gas tank tonight in the van … said with total sarcasm and disgust, in case you didn't pick up on that 😉

i can't believe i'm even going to type this. but this carton of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, has TOO much cookie dough chunks in it. yes, there is such a thing as too much. makes up for the time i got a carton with NO cookie dough chunks in it. lol!

all but 2 of the 25+ shirts in that last load of laundry, turned themselves inside out in the dryer. seriously, how does that happen?

i knew it had rained today, and knew it wasn't done raining. and it was really windy. and yet i still walked out the door to alyssa's game in a tshirt and a cardigan sweater. more proof that i'd never survive in a cold weather state. lol!

how did i spend my ENTIRE day doing scrap related work. and yet i never touched a paper trimmer or used any adhesive? gotta love the paperwork side to things 🙂

thinking about the 10 different things i should do, when the boy goes down for naptime. they're all important, need-to-get-done, things. just have to decide what comes first.

the wind is huffing and puffing, and from the sounds of it, it just might blow my house down.

    IMG_0053_edit_resize

i've noticed a few wet areas on our window seat, but couldn't find where it was coming from. with the heavy rain over the last few hours, i have now discovered a HUGE water leak above the window seat on the stair landing. same spot that they "repaired" two year ago.

    IMG_8971_edit_resize

sarah has a band concert tonight, and had to be at the high school at 4:00. guess what she realized she forgot to bring home from school, at 3:55? yes, her flute. she's lucky someone was still in the school office.

    IMG_0044_edit_resize

i'm known for NEVER dressing appropiate for the weather, and NEVER using an umbrella. so when i used joe's golf umbrella after alyssa's soccer game yesterday, it was a really big deal. big enough that the local newspaper decided to document it in the paper today 😉

  • i wanted to share a few little cards i created last week. i was working on some samples for spiffying up rub ons. rub ons are so simple to use. just rub them onto your cardstock or pattern paper, and you're done. good to go. but it's also fun to play with them a little, and make them more unique.

    LoveYou_HeartRubOn_card

isn't this heart rub on amazing? it's by autumn leaves, and it's been in my stash for years and years. the stitches are so realistic looking too.

    LoveYou_HeartRubOn_card2

so i rubbed this heart onto a piece of white textured cardstock. then i too out some diamond glaze (or paper glaze works as well), and spread it all around the main part of the heart. i left the middle part as is. the diamond glaze doesn't dry right away, so you have enough time to add to it. i choose some pink glitter. i just took a pinch of glitter, with my fingers, and sprinkled it over the diamond glaze very lightly. once i was happy with the amount of glitter, i set it aside to dry. it will take a while, if you have a lot on there.

    LoveYou_HeartRubOn_card3

once it was dry, i used my scissors to cut out around the heart. the glitter will dry right along with the diamond glaze, and the whole piece will have a fun shiny finish to it (if you click on the photos, you can see the detail better). i adhered it to the front of my card, using pop dots for some extra dimension. to complete the card, i used some dotted bo bunny paper on my card, a piece of jillibean soup ribbon, and a pebbles "love you" rub on sentiment.

    ILoveYou_RubOnBrads_card

i used another heart rub on from the same autumn leaves sheet, for this card. really wishing these rub ons were still available. can't believe i waited this long to use them.

    ILoveYou_RubOnBrads_card2

i also rubbed this heart onto white textured cardstock, and then cut the heart out with my scissors. i then used a regular hole punch to randomly punch holes all over the heart. i dug deep on my blog, to find THIS layout, where i used this same idea, but using a stamped heart.

    ILoveYou_RubOnBrads_card3

i adhered pop dots to the back of the heart, in between where the holes were. once i had adhered it to the front of my card, i used my paper piercer to poke holes in the card, were each hole was on the heart. I added a silver mini brad to each spot. to complete the card, i have some more of the bo bunny dot paper, some making memories metal mesh and brads (colored and silver), a pebbles "i love you" rub on sentiment, and some string.

just two quick ways to personalize your rubons and make them unique. i have a few more ideas, that i'll share another day 🙂

  • this week on the pebbles blog, we are debuting the happy go lucky collection. this is a collection that i couldn't wait to create with.

    Alyssa_OhSoPretty

first off, the colors. they're gorgeous colors. greens, oranges, pinks, light blue, and purples. i have said in the past that i am not a fan of purple on my scrapbook projects. i think that opinion has changed a bit over the last year. the shade of purple that i have no problem using is the shade on that paper above. i love a good, dark purple.

secondly, the patterns. one thing that i have always loved about pebbles, is the great patterns on their papers. lots of neutral, tone on tone, patterns. these are papers that i can see myself using over and over, for so many layouts.

    Alyssa_OhSoPretty_detail2

and then there are the embellishments. such a wide variety to choose from. there are lots of different types of flowers. chipboard flowers, tissue paper flowers, felt flowers, and lots of fun flower brads. along with all sorts of other goodies. i especially love the fabric brads.

    Alyssa_OhSoPretty_detail

i stuck to just using a few of the chipboard flowers on this layout. it took some restraint, because i really wanted to use a bunch of other embellishments. but this seemed like enough. and it just means that i have lots of other goodies for other layouts 🙂

make sure and keep your eye on the pebbles blog all week long, to check out what the other girls on the team have created with this collection. i can't wait to see everyone's take on it!

  • i'm back and just about recovered from my trip to denver. it was a crazy 36 hours. i was exhausted the entire time. partly because the two weeks leading up this trip have been crazy busy. hectic, and filled with assignments and projects,  in addition to my everyday life and day job. i have created SO many projects in the last two weeks, that i lost track of a lot of them. and i was also exhausted because i only ended up getting about 90 minute of sleep before i left tuesday morning. lovely way to start out a trip.

i got up at 3:15am and drove to the airport. i'll be honest. i'd rather fly in the dark, so i can't see how high up i am in those planes. lol! pretty uneventful flight. nice plane, decent seatmates, and a two hour flight. they even had some tv shows playing, but i was clueless on how to hear them. i'm a dork, and won't ask questions. so i watched the shows, and guessed as to what was going on. i arrived about 9:30, and am quite proud of myself for finding my way out of the denver airport without getting lost. that place is HUGE. i even ended up on a high speed tram, just to get to the baggage area. kind of crazy. but i've gotten pretty good at this travel thing, and found my way out, and to the shuttle to take me to my sister's house.

my sister lives about 45 minutes away from denver. i have never seen any of the homes that she's lived in, over all these years. and she's lived a LOT of places. so it was nice that this trip gave me a chance to go and visit her for the day. she showed me around town, and we drove over to boulder, and walked around downtown and had lunch. later, we picked up the girls from school, and went back to their house. later, the whole family made dinner for me.

it was a nice and relaxing day, which was just what i asked for. i'm really not a touristy person, which i'm sure some will think is lame. lol! and she was trying to convince me to go on a hike up the mountains, but i was firm in my "no" response to that. which was probably for the best. i found that i had a really hard time breathing in denver. lol! at first, i felt silly that i couldn't seem to walk and talk at the same time. but turns out, it has to do with the altitude up there. it's normal, and something you have to adjust too. i drank a ton of water those 2 days, trying to stay hydrated.

my sister drove me to my hotel after dinner. i had been up for about 37 hours at that point, and wasn't very exciting to be around. i spread out all my stuff in my hotel room, and spent a few hours preparing for the next morning.

    P1020412

and this is where i was the next morning, bright and early, after 6 hours of sleep. i totally swiped this photo from linda barber, who was there the day before me. i didn't even bring a camera with me. i spent a few hours filming my segments, and they said i did really well. i'm not totally convinced i didn't look like a dork, and i stumbled here and there. but apparently, that makes me more real. that's what i was told. believe me, people. i'm very real 😉

i can't tell you too much more about what this was all about. not right now anyways. but it was a great experience, and not as nerve wracking as i thought it would be. everyone there was so nice and helpful, and made me feel very comfortable as i went thru my stuff. when we were done, i headed back to the airport with two of the girls from the production company.

i had over two hours until my flight. turns out, i needed one of those hours just to get my bag checked (even with it prepaid), thru security, and to the appropiate gate for my flight. like i said, that airport was HUGE. security was HUGE. i usually do pretty good at security. i'm ready and quick. but this time, i think the hugeness of it threw me off. i forgot to put my toiletries in my checked bag this time, so they were in my carry on. not in a quart sized bag. lovely. tossed them in the garbage. crossed my fingers that my makeup made it thru ok. forgot to take off my flip flops and got called back. how did i remember the belt, but not the flip flops? then they had to search my purse. forgot i had a thing of hand lotion in there. it was 3.1 oz, but he let me keep it. i was so frazzled by the time i made it thru. found my gate, and sat down to call some friends to pass the rest of my wait time.

flight home was a little crazy. small plane this time. really small. i had one of those before, and hated it. couldn't even put our carry on bags overhead, it was so small. i'm not really sure of the specifics on planes, but my belief is the smaller planes hit the turbulance more. and boy, did we hit it. we were hardly off the ground, and i was already convinced we were going down. yes, i'm a little dramatic. i held my breath, and went to my happy place. there was a 5 minute stretch, where i was convinced we weren't even moving in the air. i had a nice window view of the wing, but it honestly looked like we weren't going anywhere. then the pilot came back to use the bathroom, and i wanted to say "didn't you think to go BEFORE you came on here to take me home?".

speaking of the bathroom. funny flight story. first off, i have NEVER used the bathroom on a plane. not that i havn't had too. i just havn't done it. but my before flight bottle of water went right thru me, and i had no choice this time. luckily, i was 2 seats from the bathroom. which was literally right next to the back row of seats. small plane. the tiny little aisle, that a normal person can hardly fit thru, dead ended at the tiniest bathroom ever. turns out, being by the bathroom was also entertaining.

like when some lady got up to go, and was walking to the bathroom right behind another guy. he went into the bathroom, and she got peeved. she let out a few choice words and stormed back to her seat. i'm thinking "where did you think he was going". after all, you were both walking down the 14 inch wide aisle, that dead ends at the bathroom door. anyways. a while later, she did come back and go in there. and a while later, i smelled smoke. which convinced me once again, that we were going down. once again, i'm dramatic. then, another while later, the stewardesses (i'm 99% sure i spelled that wrong) came back and asked if the lady had been smoking in the bathroom. ok, that made sense as to why i smelled smoke. we were in fact, NOT going down. the back two row of passangers (all 8 of us) confirmed that she had been smoking in there. they chatted about whether they should try talking to her. and then they did go and have a talk with her. we continue the last 15 minutes of the flight, and then landed. but not where the plane normally stops. we're told to remain seated. that law enforcement was boarding the plane, to resolve an issue. and the back two rows let out some giggles, in a "you're busted" kind of way. the stewardesses told us later, that she had been drunk before she even got on the plane. they had debated if they were even going to let her on. personally, i love when people get busted, when they've broken the rules. and she broke a big one.

so that was my crazy flight home. got back to my normal sized airport. where i could walk off the plane, gather my baggage, walk to the parking garage and find my car, all in 10 minutes flat. love that. an hour drive later, i was home. i zoned out for a few hours on the computer. then unpacked everything, since i can't stand not doing it right away. i had to unpack my suitcase of scrap supplies too, since i had assignment due the next morning. ended up staying up until 2:00am, working on that. i've been home for two nights, and still havn't managed to get more than 5.5 hours of sleep a night. which is why i'm seriously dragging today. but it's ok, since it's dreary and rainy out. makes it ok to veg out. my tireness is also probably to blame as to how long this post turned out to be. i ramble when i'm tired 😉

  • this week on the pebbles blog, we're debuting the new ever after collection. this collection is all about princesses and fairy tales. it's girly and cute. and yet, if you check out the products, they can be used for so much more than just princess projects. such fun colors and patterns, that are neutral enough to use on any project.

    EverAfter_CardSet1

when i saw the "make a wish" stamp, i knew i wanted to make some cards. i never have birthday cards on hand. and yet, they're the one kind of card that i need the most. i love making mini cards, that are 4×4 in size. you can get four cards from one sheet of cardstock.

    MakeAWish_PebblesCard_Banner

love that 3-D banner sticker. it has two layers to the banner pieces, and fit perfectly on this card.

    MakeAWish_PebblesCard_Castle

again, the castle is a dimensional sticker also. i really should take a side view shot, so you can see the layers.

    EverAfter_CardSet2

didn't realize until right now, that one of these cards isn't a birthday card. lol!

    LuvU_PebblesCard

love their felt embellishments. love that you get such a layered look, with one simple sticker.

    Sweet16_PebblesCard

i saw the "sweet" chipboard sticker, and my first thought was "sweet 16". now i just have to find someone turning 16 years old.

make sure and check out the pebbles blog all this week, to see what else the other design team girls have created with this fun collection.

  • i'm heading out to denver, colorado, in the morning. actually, i'm leaving the house in 4.5 hours, to drive to the airport. why am i still up, you ask?

    IMG_9820_edit_resize

because i was still working on getting all this together. that right there, is 24 projects, that i'm taking with me to film some fun crafting DVD's. i also have all my supplies and tools. just my scrapping stuff filled up an entire suitcase. let me tell you, getting scrap stuff to fit in a suitcase, is much harder then getting clothes and toiletries. lol!

i'll be offline until i get back. not sure how i will survive the one and three quarter's of a day, without my internet. and with this short and sweet post, i'm off to have a quick bowl of ice cream (cookie dough. my new obsession). and maybe try and get a few hours of sleep, before 3:20 comes along 🙂

  • i've been working on a very big project all weekend. it involves a ton of little projects. one of those happened to involve paint and chipboard.

    IMG_9782

don't these look sort of cool? normally, when i paint chipboard pieces, they're flat and just plain looking. these flowers have tons of texture and remind me of frosting 🙂

    IMG_9789

this is the color that i wanted to use. it matched the pattern papers i had on a layout. but, the paint was dried out. not entirely dried out. but it definately wasn't runny, and i couldn't squeeze it out of the paint jar. i was set on using it anyways, since the color was perfect.

    IMG_9804

i've heard of mixing some water in with the paint, but wasn't quite ready to try that. so i grabbed some toothpicks. mainly, they were just to get the paint out of the jar, so that i could decide what to do with it.

    IMG_9793

the paint was thick, but still workable.

    IMG_9797

so i just used the toothpick to spread the paint around on the chipboard flower. it's totally like frosting a cake. at least, this is how i frost my cakes. i never make the frosting smooth. i like it to look like it has some texture to it.

    IMG_9806

i let it sit for a bit, to make sure the paint would actually dry ok. i was worried it wouldn't completely dry, and that it would still be pliable. it wasn't an issue though, and it dried perfectly.

    IMG_9813

i thought it was a pretty cool little trick. it's nice to know that the paints are still usable, since i would hate to get rid of all those pretty colors. just have to play around with them, in a new way. and the best part, was that i didn't have to clean any paintbrushes. i just threw my little toothpick away :)
