so yesterday, i was feeling so organized and on top of things. i knew since today was tuesday … that it would all fall apart. tuesdays are my craziest days … and always the days that drain me the most. i had 7 kids here today … all day. this is really the first day of having them all together … since the girls just got out of school. and right up front i’m saying my disclaimer. this is just sarcastic, good old venting … nothing to be taken too seriously or personally. love the kids … love spending my days with them. in fact … here’s a photo of 4 of those kids … just to prove that i love them!

that being said … i had kids here for 11 hours. and during those 11 hours … why is it i spend about 80% of my time in the kitchen? started with breakfast. i actually only had 5 kids to feed breakfast too. but i did the babies first … and by babies, i always mean the little ones under the age of two. then i did the big kids … and by big kids, i mean anyone over the age of two. lol! next thing you know it was lunchtime … 7 kids to feed. but big kids first … because the babies were still waking up from naps. then one baby … then another one when they woke up … and then another one added in. you can’t hold those babies off … when they wake up, they want to eat NOW! i think lunch took me all of 2 hours from start to finish … preparing, feeding, cleaning of kids, cleaning of dishes. here’s a rough estimate of just 2 meals.

  • breakfast for babies: 3 waffles, 2 bananas, handfuls of cereal, raisins, and 3 sippy cups of milk
  • breakfast for big kids: 4 slices of sourdough toast with butter, 1 bowl of jello (odd combo), and 2 cups of apple juice
  • lunch for babies: 3 hot dogs (think what you will about hot dogs, but the kids love them), macaroni and cheese, a can of cut up pears, gobs of cut up grapes, green beans (niko loves those), goldfish, and 3 sippy cups of milk
  • lunch for big kids: 6 hot dogs with ketchup, macaroni and cheese, gobs of grapes, 2 apples, cheez its, 4 cups of sunny delight

and i kid you not … half hour afterwards … i had ariana asking me when snack time was! lol! and she asked over and over and over and over and over … because that is what she does. “why can’t you tell us it’s snack time?”. then she would close her eyes really tight and say “i REALLY wish you would say it is snack time”. and i would reply “then you just keep wishing REALLY hard and at 3:00 it will be snack time”. lol! that girl is so dramatic.

and i snapped this photo for no reason. but when i saw it on the computer … i had to laugh. because you see sarah trying to usher all the kids out of the bathroom? that is normally me. lol! because you know that there is just no way that i can actually go in there by myself. and if i ever shut the door … they sit there and bang on it and fiddle with the handle. and frankly … it’s just easier to have them come in with me. i drink a TON of water … so i’m in there all day long. and the whole 10 seconds it takes me to tinkle … gets drawn out because i’m keeping little hands from unraveling the toilet paper, flushing before i’m done, getting in the garbage can, and trying to climb up on my lap. then i have to get them all out of the bathroom. it’s not that exciting … i’m waiting for the day when they decided the coming with me isn’t that much fun. yeah, right!

and then this crazy girl. gotta love ariana … she’s super funny! sarah got this blow-up guitar the other day at an arcade spot with amanda. so ariana was carrying it around and really getting down with it. she even did a knee slide with it for me for a photo … and i didn’t even ask her to do it. so i was in the kitchen (no surprise there) … and i hear her say:

i hate that stupid” … and immediatley i started to say her name the way i say it when she’s in trouble. and the girls all stopped what they were doing and had those looks on their faces like they knew i was going to be mad. because in this house … we don’t say “stupid” or “hate”. the girls actually grew up thinking those were bad words … as in swearing words. but then i heard her next few words and i knew exactly what she was talking about … and i was laughing so hard!

“i hate that stupid old pickup truck you never let me drive. you’re a redneck, heartbreak who’s really bad at lying. so watch me stike a match on all my wasted time. as far as i’m concerned, you’re just another picture to burn”. yep, the girl was singing taylor swift … and she was singing it good! i joined in at the end … and she just gave me her big smile. although she told me that she was singing carrie underwood. whatever … i’m a fan of both of them. it was so funny though.

see … that wasn’t so bad of a vent, right? lol! i went from griping about my crazy day … to highlighting a great moment in the midst of it. there are always plenty of the good little things throughout the day. which is why … even though i’m exhausted beyond belief and have not an ounce of energy left … i will get up and do it all again tomorrow morning!

Holy Moly girl you weren’t kidding when you said Tuesdays are your crazy day! I can hardly handle my 2 boys let alone 7 kids! You must have the patience of a saint! Love your little anecdotes – remind me that my life is not so abnormal even if it is crazy! The other day in all of the 15 minutes it took me to put laundry away upstairs my two monkeys unrolled an entire roll of toilet paper in our foyer, ripped it to shreds, and then poured water all over it. Why you ask? They were cleaning the floor for me! Gotta love kids!

Even though you had a crazy, busy day, it sounds like you had fun with them too! My two keep me busy enough, i cannot imgine having more than that to deal with! They always want something to eat or drink, drives me crazy! Hopefully your two help out with the kids a lot, and don’t add to the craziness!

I could so hear you getting ready to chew her out and then start busting up when you realized it was a song! One of my favorite songs and it’s on my new ipod LOL.
Sorry it was crazy but glad you can now look back on it and have a good laugh.

WOW! You aren’t kidding when you say crazy! But in a good way! I know what you mean about feeling like you’re never out of the kitchen–especially having them beg for more 1/2 hour after eating! Cute story about Ariana–she’s looking so big!

You are amazing – I would be a basket case before snack time, that’s for sure. So cute, my 8yo loves to sing Carrie Underwood songs – she rocks the “Before He Cheats” chorus and so I finally showed her the video – not too appropriate, but we don’t say “hate”, “stupid” or “shut up”, either.

That’s the only time my kids are allowed to say STUPID too…because I LOVE that song, lol!
Hey, better they sing that than “I dug my key into the side of that pretty little souped-up 4 wheel drive, carved my name into his leather seats….took a louisville slugger to both headlights, stabbed a hole in all 4 tires…maybe next time he’ll think before he cheats”
My daughter sang that…I KNOW she’s only heard it once or twice. Maybe I ought to ban the country station on her radio in her room?????

I give you a ton of credit Laura! You really have a very important role and you do it well. I could not handle all of that!
That bathroom story made me laugh so hard, that I almost peed my pants-pun intended.
What a riot! I have to shut the door, even if it means that my son is shaking the door handle screaming, “Mommy”.
Love all the blog posts, it makes for great night time reading. And I’m using your blog links to do some reading!
