so you all know alyssa, right? she's cute if i say so myself. sure, sometimes she gives me these totally cheesy smiles. like this one here … taken at sarah's birthday party in june.

IMG_0986_edit_crop_resize

and she has the most perfect smile … with all these perfectly lined up teeth that her dad paid a pretty penny for. lol! she wore the braces for a year and a half. and she got them off a year ago. and she has worn her retainers every night without any complaining … she's very responsible about it. but then she had these 2 teeth that decided to grow in … before the baby teeth could fall out.

IMG_0987_edit_resize

how's that for a close-up? now, keep in mind … this photo was over 2 months ago. so see those 2 teeth coming out her gums? what are they called … eye teeth, fangs?!?! well, her left one wasn't too bad … and the baby tooth fell out last week. but the right one (on your left) … it was totally grown in and protruding out the gums. above where it should be … because the other tooth was still there. and the baby tooth wasn't even that loose … and had no wiggle room to even try and get out. and then … she had to stop wearing her top retainer about a month ago … because it wouldn't go in. then the top middle teeth .. they were starting to seperate. so between us and the orthodontist … we finally decided the tooth had to come out.

so yesterday, i took her in to the dentist after school. the dude checks out the tooth and decides that it really has no room to work itself out on it's own. so we figure we'll just freeze the gum area and get the tooth out. there really was no root left … so it shouldn't hurt too much … that's what he told us at least. so he put some stuff on the gum … no shots or anything … just some stuff that he squirted on. and then he waited for it to do it's job numbing up the area.

now … i have to tell you … i get the heebie-jeebies just watching kids wiggle loose teeth. it just creeps me out … and i hate to watch. and i hate the dentist. not personally … because they're very nice people. but i hate what they do there. even when i go for check-ups … i have my hands in my pockets the entire time i'm there … with my fists clenched as tight as they can. and i tend to hold my breath a lot when they're working on me … sometimes they stop and remind me to breathe.

so anyways … enough about me … and back to my girl. so she's numb. and the dentist pulls out this big metal tool … and grabs a hold of the tooth and starts pulling. what the heck?!?! alyssa was holding on to the chair for dear life … and you could definately tell that it wasn't completely pain-free. and he yanked … and then yanked some more. and it did come out. the tooth was out … and there was a good amount of blood. not gushing or anything … but some blood. he cotton balled her up … and we were done.

and what was her mother doing during that 47 seconds of tooth-pulling? was she by her daughters side, holding her hand, and giving her support and reassurance? NO, SHE WAS NOT. she was in the corner of the room, with her hands over her mouth in horror, eyes totally shut (but ever so slightly peeking out) … stunned by what was being done right in front of her … and trying really hard to stay focused and not pass out. seriously people! i was of no use to my little girl … how bad of a mom am i?!?! lol! when she called her dad last night … she told him that he should have taken her instead. lol!

Way to be there, Mom…lol, totally kidding…sounds like it was not a pretty scene..I went through hell with my teeth when I was in about third grade..had way too many teeth for my little mouth and had to have several cut out before they came in..thank goodness my parents made my teeth a priority or I would have looked like a monster…and then I wore braces for 4 years..and then later in high school, I got to have my wisdom teeth cut out too..way fun! Glad your girlie is doing well..sounds like she was brave..and her teeth are beautiful!

I’d be on the floor passed out COLD! (did I ever mention that I HAVE passed out while getting work done?) I do NOT like going to the dentist! Hope she’s not traumatized to go back. Sounds like she took it like a trooper though. She’ll be smiling that beautiful smile in not time!
    Feel better soon Alyssa!!

Oh poor baby!!! I hope your both are doing fine now. Take her out for ice cream, just the two of you. Share your fear with her, she will understand:) As mom’s we are only human. Be gentle on yourself.
My fear rollercoasters…and we live five mins. from Kings Island. I know I am going to have to get over this. As she is now tall enough to ride all the rides. I have been able to avoid it up until this point.

That is why Marc and my mom always went to the doctors with the kids. Now Nicki goes with me when I go. I am such a big baby when it comes to doctors.

Hey Laura! Bet you’re glad that’s over with!! No, you are not a bad mom!!! I have a hard time with that stuff too! My son got his two front teeth pulled almost 2 years ago, he had to be put under anesthetic and the whole bit, he did just fine, I was the one that was a blubbering idiot! He has to get a filling in a few weeks, they’ll give him a needle etc, and I was told that they usually don’t let parents into the room with the child. Probably for the best, he;ll again be calmer than me hopefully!
    take care,

wow! what a story! you sound like me when it comes to the dentist. I hate going. I had a weird tooth that had appeared below my bottom teeth, and when my mom scheduled a dentist appt. for me a couple weeks later, or so {I can’t remember} but that morning it just disappeared!? it must have known that I hated going to the dentist! Your daughter is a brave girl!

So sorry for you and your daughter – ugh! tooth pain is yucky! Don’t beat yourself up-we all have those moments when we wonder what the heck? Where were my mother instincts? Your daughters pic reminded me of what my teeth looked like when I was young. My ortho would not pull my “eye teeth” he instead took out a section of skin so they could attach a bracket and pull it through the skin naturally – sounds silly but I have to say it worked. I always think thank goodness I was born with bad “monster” teeth in this day and age then back in the early 1900’s or something – could you imagine? -now they can do so much! And your daughter has a beautiful smile!

Oh my GOSH — How is Alyssa today – and how are you? And, let me just tell you that I AVOID the dentist as much as possible. I was even supposed to go back in January (and haven’t). Like you, I say they are not bad people, but the thought of having to go to the dentist freaks me out.
And while I’m talking about all this — poor Nicholas has his first dentist appointment on Friday (and he has a loose tooth).

OMG – horrible!!! I thought you were going to say you passed out and when you woke up she was done – lol! My kids are not a fan of the dentist so I try my best to use the brave face but it’s usually hard when your laying on one of them – lol!! J/K – sort of! How’s she feeling today?

i don’t mind the bi-yearly checkups, but anything beyond that i can’t stand…last time i had to have a silver cap replaced (years ago) and they luckily had a walkman so i could blare some music while they made all that noise. yucky, yucky!

I have the same thing as your daughter except that the baby teeth have already fallen out so they just pull the adult ones out or I’d just have holes in my gums 😦
If anyone has any ideas, please, do tell!
