i thought i would share some thoughts on project life with you today. and also show you how i go about setting up my album, and getting it all assembled. here's my kit, that came on monday.

IMG_2582_edit_resize

i have been a fan of becky higgins forever. and from her first project 365 kit, i just fell in love with the concept. the photo-a-day idea. it's a big commitment. but it's also a super cool project, when you see it coming together. i'm so glad that i completed my 2009 album (with the exception of a few months of journaling to finish. lol!), and i kind of regret that i didn't stay with it for 2010. but i'm back for this coming  year, and am really excited about it. it might also help that i'm in love with the turquoise edition. i just heard that kerri bradford was the genious behind the design. which totally made sense, because it's her style from start to finish. and i'm a huge fan of her's also. so i was really meant to work with this kit 😉

here's a little something i blogged last year, as i was discussing the idea of project life, and showing my first few weeks of the project:

"here is what i tell anyone that asks me about this project. don't overthink it. don't stress over it. it's one photo a day, and one journaling card. so simple. did you have something special one day, and take 50 photos, and were worried about what to do. stop, and pick just one photo to represent that day. you can scrap that same photo, along with the other 49 photos, on another layout if you want. this project can be all that you scrap the entire year. or it can be just another project that you do, in addition to other layouts. it's all about what you want it to be. seriously. looking back at my album from last year, i would guess that about 70% of the photos in that album are ones that i'll never scrap on an actual layout. and yet, i have them in an album with some journaling. they're represented and accounted for. how cool is that? to be able to document all the little things in our life. the ones that we don't feel are special enough to devote an entire layout too. but that really do make up our day to day life, and tell something about us."

i'm so insightful, aren't i? lol! anyways. onto how i assemble my album. keep in mind, this is how i do it. and could be totally different from what everyone else does. or maybe my way just doesn't work for you. totally fine. in fact, if you check that link i mentioned above (the "this year" one), you'll find a link there to a fellow blogger that filmed a video on setting up her album. it's really cool to watch. and she did a few things i would never do. but that's what makes us all unique, right 🙂

IMG_2587_edit_resize

the first thing i do, is add all the divided page protectors to the album. then i pull out all the title cards. there is one for each week, along with some extras. these are where you write the dates for that week. i spread out all the designs, and then put them in a nice, planned out order. but that's mainly because i'm slightly anal about things being perfect, and not having the same design or color in a row. lol! then i go through, and slip one title card in the top left pocket for each week. 52 times.

IMG_2589_edit_resize

the monthly bookmarks are to add into the album, to give a clear view of where each month starts. these come with a thin plastic covering on them, to protect them from scratches. so i simply peel all of those coverings off, and then i place the entire stack of bookmarks into the front of the album. i will insert them into the correct spots, as i go along.

IMG_2591_edit_resize

there are some special front page and back page cards. there's a picture in the kit, of how they could be arranged. while you could certainly change it up, i figure if someone else took the time to think it out and come up with a plan, then i'm all for it. so i slipped those all in, exactly like they showed.

NOTE: since 2011 starts on a saturday, i will be starting my album on that day. i like the idea of a sunday thru saturday week. so i will actually take one of these filler cards and one title card OUT, and slipping in my very first photo and journaling card. i'm ok with having my title page and my first official day be together.

IMG_2592_edit_resize

next up is the filler cards. there are spots for eight journaling cards on each weekly spread. since there are seven days in a week, the extra spot gets filled with a filler card. these are just decorative cards, that work on their own. or you could do something to them. i spread out the filler cards, with the ten designs. and then i go through the album again, and slip one in each week. i try to pick the best design or color that goes with the title card for that week. this entire kit matches of course. but some cards just naturally look better with certain cards. kwim?

IMG_2595_edit_resize

the journaling cards. this takes a bit of time. i spread them all out, into the different designs. there are 20 designs. keep in mind, there are bi-fold designs included in the kit as well. these are for when you have more to say, and want more room to write. i don't put these in my album to start. if the time comes and i want a bi-fold card, then i swap it out.

for arranging the journaling cards, i split them into 3 groups. once again, this is just totally my way of doing this. and my way, isn't the right way for everyone. just how i do it. i sort them into three groups (2 groups of seven, and 1 group of six = 20 designs), so that i have a good mix of designs and colors. i like to make sure i don't end up with a bunch of cards with red in one week, or have all the best cards with the text on them in another week. so i sort them out. then i shuffle them out into weeks, using group one, then group two, then group three, and then back to group one. since the third group has 6 designs, i randomly pull a card from the other piles to add in.

IMG_2598_edit_resize

once i have the 52 stacks, all in order, i start slipping them into the album. for me, it doesn't matter what pockets i slip them into for each week. because when i add the photos, and then go to journal, i will arrange them exactly how i want them. i just like to have them IN the album, and in the orders i want for the weeks. kwim? some people keep them in the boxes they come in, and randomly pull them out to use. but i prefer to have as much as i can, put together and ready to go.

IMG_2593_edit_resize

and now, my album is all assembled and ready to go. how i worked on this for my 2009 album, was to print my photos every weekend. i'm about 3 minutes from my costco, so it's easy and convenient to place small orders like that. i don't want to make anything super complicated, or have multiple spots to upload photos or keep track of them.

so for me, i just take my photos during the week. pick my seven photos for the week, upload them to costco and order, and then slip them in the album. if i do this every week, i can remember what photo goes with what day. and i write the journaling cards when i add the photos. i journal about what the photo is. so i don't feel the need to write anything down during the week. i don't have a great memory, but i CAN remember what the photos are about just by looking at them ;)

in the end, i have the one storage box that holds my extra pieces. the bi-fold journaling cards, the days and numbers stickers, the extra title cards and filler cards, and the date stamp. so i have the album and a small storage box. that's all i need to work on this project, in addition to my photos and a pen for journaling. love that.

have i talked you into ordering one of your own yet? you know you're all intriqued by it, right? i need some of my online friends, to be doing this project too. so we can keep each other on track. if you have ordered it, which kit did you get? if you havn't ordered, do you need a gentle nudge. because i can do that. i'm a great enabler. lol! and if you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask.

Hi Laura, I’m waiting for my Project life, any day now. Also love love the turquoise one too, so many cool designs on the cards. I set mine up this way too, don’t like to see too much of the same color in one week, lol. Walgreen’s is about 5mts from me so I order 7 photos every week and pick them up and put them right into the album. This will also be my 3rd year doing it and I love love Becky. You are right about making it fun and unstressful it’s mostly pictures that I won’t do a layout about but want to remember this memory.
You were very persuasive and if I wasn’t already buying one your story would have made me want one. Will be fun to keep each other on track so we don’t fall behind. Have a happy day.

Hi Laura – thanks for the post. This will be my first year doing project life and I’m so excited. I hope I can keep it up. I’m expecting mine today. I can’t wait to open it up and get organized (thanks again for the tips). I’m still a bit undecided when to start it. I also like a weeks layout to be Sun-Sat. I might start mine 12/26. I started taking my pictures just in case. I do like the way you are starting yours on Jan 1 though. Thanks for sharing and all the inspiration you post. Happy New Year.

Giving this a thought, I think so much more happens than we can remember throughout the year, this helps keep us appreciative of even the simpilist of things! Thanks and Good Luck!

My title pages, front and back pages, and filler pages are in the album. I’ll pick a card to journaling on and slip the card into the album on that particular day. Trying a different approach this year.

I really want to do this and I appreciate you sharing what you do—I like the idea of having everything already into the album prior to
    But my question is…..
I do not live close to anywhere that prints photos and I do not print at home…Do you have any advise/suggestions for folks like me that print in BIG bunches and by the time I get the photos back I have forgotten what was what?

I’m on the fence–truthfully….I know it’s a lot of work but looks ABSOLUTELY cool. I like the turquoise edition. This sounds lame, but how do you figure out which picture to take? is there room for more than one shot that day? Do you write it from your perspective or that of your family? Like I said I’m on the fence–I think it would be interesting to see what happens in a year it would make it easier to write a Christmas letter! 🙂 Thanks for your help!

Hello! I love your post. This will be my second year to do project life. I ordered the amber edition, but now I kind of wish I had ordered the turquoise one. I would love to see random updates of your album during the year. It is fun to see someone else’s progress.

I have almost finished the 2010 Project Life. I got my new one on Tuesday. I put it together almost like how you do it. It is a lot easier. I even round the corners on the pictures. When Project 365 came out I rounded the corners on the title cards. Last year they were already rounded.I enjoy doing these albums

Great post Laura! I put mine together just about the same way, but this year I grabbed 6 extra sheet protectors from my stash and put the paper that comes with the kit in there to keep in the back of my album. That way if I ever use it, I know where it is!
I finished PL 2010 and some months I had a pic a day, other times the whole page featured a certain day…love the versatility of the kit

Hello everyone who has left a comment here so far. I’m going to try and help some of you who are undecided. First and formost please click on the project life button on Laura’s right hand side of blog, it will take you right to Becky Higgins blog and you will see the little video she just put together some of her 2010 photos and they are the cutest and really explain how it can be a photo of ANYTHING.
    1. You can also check out my blog which I upload every Tuesday to show my pictures of the week, my blog is http://everydaymemorieswithprojectlife.blogspot.com
    2. This is really easy if you get it ready like Laura explained. So all you do is slide your photo in and write a sentence or two on the journal card.
    3. Some days you won’t know what to take a picture of, hand the camera over to your child, husband, friend, self-timer of you doing something, the sky, the tree in your yard, it really is about anything. Also you don’t have to have a photo everyday, some days put some junk mail in there, a picutre or note your hubby or child wrote to you, movie tickets, concert tickets, school papers, anything you want. Some days you can even leave blank and don’t worry about it.
    3. On my kids birthday weeks I made the whole week about them, took photos of them, took photos of their room, their clothes, friends, make it a special week just for them to look at and read.Same with holidays, make it a week about the holiday, decorations, traditions, family over, etc.
    4. There are no rules to this book, it is amazing, this will be my 3rd year doing it and I love love it for the easyness of it. So many short memories I would have forgoten about. My kids love to read this again and again.
    5. last year when I got my album I found a lady who was doing it also and has a bunch of us link to her blog every week and we look at each others photos and share ideas and have become friends thru this. It makes it fun and accountable when you know others are going to see your photos. Also Becky Higgins has a whole community started like this already that you can join in on for free.
    6. The lady with the question about ordering pictures. I would suggest ordering from snapfish, walgreen’s, anywhere really and having them sent to you every couple weeks. These places usually have good deals for this service. So as you take your photo that day put a little paper with what the picture is for that day and slide that into your album untill you get your pictures back then you will know right where they go. I do this all the time. Hope this helps.
    7. Laura did an amazing job explaining these to us, and if she can do it anyone can do it because she is one busy busy person.
    8. What’s also exciting is that their is two choice colors which I love love and am going with the turqoise one because it’s so graphic and wordy.
Ok that’s all I have for now, hope you don’t mind me helping you laura. Please read my blog which I just finished my December Daily album but if you scroll down to November and all the past year photos I’ve taken. Feel free to leave me comments or questions on my blog if you need too. Good luck everyone!!

Well, sadly I think this is the year I will skip. I haven’t finished 2010 yet still need to get photos printed and placed and journal. And I have a couple other goals for this year and just don’t think I can fit it in, but that being said, I am quite anxious to see how you do your as you go along. So I will be watching…who knows maybe half way through the year I will want to get one. Never know.

Laura! I have been staring at this and thinking about it for several days…and I think you got me. I love blogging because I am capturing more of the everyday things happening in life. My worry is if I do project life I’ll stop blogging and I love blogging…but you showed me how I could organize this to make it really, really easy. I can journal and then print my photos laider…I’ll just upload them to Walgreen’s as I go. Going to sleep on it tonight, but have a feeling I’ll be doing “click…add to cart” tomorrow morning! Thanks for the extra nudge…

Hmmmmm, I dunno Laura, I’m on the fence this year. As you know I totally did it in 2009 along with you, then last year I started it and gave up after a couple of months to concentrate on scrapbooking layouts as I found that this suffered in 2009 when I was doing Project Life. Now this year I’m not sure. I havn’t ordered a kit, I still have last years mostly unused so I’m wonderering if I should carry on with that from where I left off. I do love my 2009 album and love that I have that record and I definitely noticed that I didn’t take nearly as many photos this past year. It was almost like I was in photo burnout from the prior year. So maybe I will just try to start taking a photo a day again and take it from there and then maybe put them in the album I still have here rather than buying a new one, although I do love the colours of the turquoise one! Dilemnas huh!!! I will think on it some more :o)

Okay, so my daughter and I got ours on Tuesday and this is her first year and my second. She has the Amber and I have the turquoise. I am so excited and she is too! So we are ready for the 2011 challenge and we try to keep up with you 🙂 After looking back at 2010’s project life I am so glad I did it and stuck with it. It was all worth it.

Rock on Laura 🙂 I ordered the Amber Edition …. I figured I could see how year number 3 would go with another P365 🙂 I’ve been working on finishing up my 2010 album for the past couple of weeks. Kind of a hot mess when I do nothing but take the picture each day and do nothing else. HA! But I am proud to report that I am officially into October. Yeah, me!

Just wanted to wish you luck and good wishes on your Project Life for 2011. I just finished my second year of this project and while I loved the idea and only missed a few days in 2010, I decided to take a break for 2011. I might do a best photos of the month thing because now taking a picture a day has become a habit – lol!

    Laura,
Thanks for all your great tips. I love how versatile the kit is. I look forward to seeing your progress through the year.
To those who have posted that they are taking a break, I encourage you to look at the kit differently. It doesn’t have to be for a photo a day. It can be used to record special events through out the year or maybe two or three.
    There are no rules!
